Yearbook Archive Spotlight: U.S. Olympic Skaters Through History

The 2018 Winter Olympics are right around the corner, which prompted us to take a look through our digital yearbook collection to see who we could find.

While they gained fame for their talents on the ice, all of these past Olympians also had to pose for yearbook photos, just like the rest of us.

Eric Heiden: Speed skating

  • Yearbook photo: West High School (Madison, WI), 1976, senior year
  • Olympics attended: 1976 (Innsbruck), 1980 (Lake Placid)
  • Medal count: 5 gold
  • Only Olympic speed skater to have won a gold medal in all events

Bonnie Blair: Speed skating

  • Yearbook photo: Centennial High School (Champaign, IL), 1980, sophomore year
  • Olympics attended: 1984 (Sarajevo), 1988 (Calgary), 1992 (Albertville), 1994 (Lillehammer)
  • Medal count: 5 gold, 1 bronze
  • One of the most decorated athletes in the history of the Winter Olympics

Brian Boitano: Figure skating

  • Yearbook photo: Marian A. Peterson High School (Sunnyvale, CA), 1980, junior year
  • Olympics attended: 1984 (Sarajevo), 1988 (Calgary), 1994 (Lillehammer)
  • Medal count: 1 gold
  • Returned to the Olympics following a successful professional career and a 6-year hiatus

Dan Jansen: Speed skating

  • Yearbook photo: West Allis Central School (West Allis, WI), 1982, junior year
  • Olympics attended: 1984 (Sarajevo), 1988 (Calgary), 1992 (Albertville), 1994 (Lillehammer)
  • Medal count: 1 gold
  • Finally won his gold medal in his last event of the 1994 Winter Games

Tonya Harding: Figure skating

  • Yearbook photo: Milwaukie High School (Milwaukie, OR), 1986, freshman year
  • Olympics attended: 1992 (Albertville), 1994 (Lillehammer)
  • Medal count: 0
  • Skating career ended in 1994 after she pled guilty to hindering investigation into attack on skating rival Nancy Kerrigan

Nancy Kerrigan: Figure skating

  • Yearbook photo: Stoneham High School (Stoneham, MA), 1987, senior year
  • Olympics attended: 1992 (Albertville), 1994 (Lillehammer)
  • Medal count: 1 silver, 1 bronze
  • Injured in an attack before her 1994 Olympic appearance

Kristi Yamaguchi: Figure skating

  • Yearbook photo: Mission San Jose High School (Fremont, CA), 1988, junior year
  • Olympics attended: 1992 (Albertville)
  • Medal count: 1 gold
  • Came away with the gold medal after the two other contenders in the ladies’ singles event both fell in their routines

Joey Cheek: Speed skating

  • Yearbook photo: James B. Dudley High School (Greensboro, NC), 1994, freshman year
  • Olympics attended: 2002 (Salt Lake City), 2006 (Turin)
  • Medal count: 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze
  • Was elected by his teammates to carry the U.S. flag at the 2006 Closing Ceremony

Chad Hedrick: Speed skating

  • Yearbook photo: Klein High School (Klein, TX), 1992, freshman year
  • Olympics attended: 2006 (Turin), 2010 (Vancouver)
  • Medal count: 1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze
  • Was a champion inline speed skater before switching to become an ice speed skater
