It’s almost time for your high school reunion, which means you can reminisce with some of your former peers, many of whom you may not have seen in years. If you’re worried about coming up with topics to discuss, why not talk about some of these major events that took place the year you graduated?

If you graduated in 1970, your 50-year high school reunion is coming up! Some historical events include:

  • The U.S. lowered its voting age to 18, when President Nixon signed the bill into law on June 22nd
  • 100,000 people led protests in Washington D.C. about the country’s involvement in the Vietnam War
  • The Beatles officially disbanded
  • The U.S. population hit 205 million people
  • The first New York marathon took place in Central Park
  • Simon and Garfunkel released their iconic last album “Bridge Over Troubled Water”

If you graduated in 1980, your 40-year high school reunion is coming up! Some historical events include:

  • The Arcade game Pac-Man was officially released
  • Mount St. Helens Volcano in Washington State erupted on May 18th
  • The famous Dallas episode that finally revealed “Who Shot JR” premiered on November 21st
  • The Rubik’s Cube debuted internationally at a toy fair in January and was then released to toy stores in May
  • The channel CNN launched on June 1st
  • The U.S. population hit 226,504,825 people
  • Ronald Reagan was elected president

  • “The Simpsons” won its first of 34 awards at the Emmys, for best animated program in season 1
  • Nelson Mandela was released from prison on February 11th
  • The demolition of the Berlin Wall began in June
  • The Godfather: Part III began its run in theaters on December 25th
  • Vanilla Ice’s song “Ice Ice Baby” premiered on August 22nd

If you graduated in 1995, your 25-year high school reunion is coming up! Some historical events include:

  • NASA’s Galileo spacecraft arrived at Jupiter in December
  • Michael Jordan returned to the NBA, officially ending his retirement
  • OJ Simpson’s trial came to a close, after a jury found him not guilty
  • Microsoft released Windows 95
  • Ebay launched online
  • The DVD was developed in 1995, although was officially released in 1996
  • The Grateful Dead announced their breakup
  • Toy Story premiered in theaters in November, becoming the first wholly computer animated film

If you graduated in 2000, your 20-year high school reunion is coming up! Some historical events include:

  • Sony released the PlayStation 2 in Japan
  • The final new Peanuts comic strip was published in February
  • The 2000 election presidential votes were recounted, but the Supreme Court ended the recount in December, leading George W. Bush to become President
  • America Online and Time Warner merged
  • Tiger Woods became the youngest player to win the Grand Slam in golf
  • The London Eye, the world’s largest Ferris wheel, opened
