Classmates Partners With Pipeline Entertainment to Create Television Series
Series to draw from personal stories of Classmates' 35 million members
RENTON, WA -
Jun 27, 2002 -
Classmates Online, Inc, a personal networking service connecting friends, family, military and work colleagues, today announced it entered into an agreement with Pipeline Entertainment to produce an episodic television series based on the company's member stories and experiences.
Planned for launch in Fall 2003, the project will be formulated in both reality-based and dramatic formats. The series will feature true-life stories including former sweethearts falling back in love, friends reviving strong bonds from their youth, adopted children finding birth parents, and military buddies recapturing memories of shared experiences. The show is under development for network television or first-run syndication.
"Developing a television property reinforces Classmates online presence while extending our brand to millions of consumers in the offline world," Michael Schutzler, president and chief executive officer of Classmates. "In addition to featuring real-life stories from Classmates' members, the series will show viewers how to make their own connections. Through a mix of stories and how-to advice we expect to see an increase in membership as viewers are inspired to reconnect with friends and family."
In a recent survey conducted by Classmates, more than 43% of respondents said they were interested in watching a Classmates television show featuring the lives of old classmates.
"This venture marks another milestone in the evolution of relationships between broadcast entities and popular Web properties," said Matthew Papish, chief executive officer of Pipeline Entertainment and executive producer of the project. "In addition to being a phenomenally successful brand, Classmates hosts a reservoir of compelling and dramatic stories required for the long term success of episodic television."
In addition to his role at Pipeline Entertainment, Matthew Papish was a founder, president and driving force behind Gold Coast Entertainment Group. A forerunner at melding traditional media and Web content, Papish brokered an innovative media partnership between Universal Worldwide Television and Excite@Home for Gold Coast's top rated first run syndication property. "Blind Date."
Additionally, Papish oversaw the development and production of such television programs as "Rendez-View" for Paramount Domestic Television; the Cable Ace-nominated series "The Beef," hosted by Tim Conway; "Brady Bunch Home Movies" for CBS Television; USA Networks' "Alien Voices" with Leonard Nimoy; and "Reel Wild Cinema" with Sandra Bernhard.
Classmates was represented in negotiations with Pipeline Entertainment by Roger Armstrong of the law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP.
