Larry's Story
Life
I now live near Cincinnati, Ohio. My day job transferred me here in October 2003 and then did away with my job in September, 2004. I'm still playing Sax, Clarinet and Flute, just not as much as I would like to. While living in Florida (25 years) I worked with a variety of local groups plus national acts and shows that come through this area of the country, everyone from the Guy Lombardo, Glenn Miller, Tex Beneke, Nelson Riddle and Jimmy Dorsey bands to Manhattan Transfer, Florence Henderson, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Jay and The Americans, The Supremes, the Four Tops and The Temptations. I love it but I also have to eat, so I'm also a computer geek by day to pay the bills! My kids are grown and "gone" - a daughter who is 35 and a nurse, with daughters that are 14 years and 6 years old, and a son who is 33 and has been in the Navy for 16 years. I remarried in June 2000 and "re-divorced" in 2006.
I'd really like to hear from anyone in '66 -'72, especially all my old friends from the band.
School
High School - not much I would change, except maybe I would have actually studied and practiced my instruments more. If tested, they would have labeled me A.D.D. - I was NEVER challenged and was ALWAYS bored out of my mind. But... I met the best friends of my life there, and some of us are still in contact.
College
College was a blur the first time, I took too much advantage of the early 70's and screwed up just about everything in my life. I ended up going into the Navy to avoid getting drafted into the Army, and after 8 years in the Navy Band and acquiring a family, I got out, went back to school and actually paid attention and increased the grade point average a few points (3.99), getting an AS in Computer Sci...Expand for more
ence, then getting a real job. I later went back and finished a BS in Information Technology.
Workplace
I've worked several jobs since high school - McDonald's in college, 8 years as a musician in the Navy, then a few years as an Electronics Technician while going back to college. In the computer field, I then worked as a Mainframe Systems Programmer and an Applications Programmer, a PC Applications Programmer, a Corporate Computer Instructor, Teacher, Network Administrator, Helpdesk Administrator. I am currently the entire IT department at a small non-profit company in Cincinnati that works with physically and mentally challenged folks.
Military
I originally went into the Navy to avoid the draft (I had gotten a "greetings" letter in the mail and it was NOT friendly!) and was supposed to be trained as an aircraft mechanic. Then I found out they had bands, so I auditioned, was accepted and spent 8 years playing my horns as a means of national defense. I think the sound of it scared the enemy away!! After boot camp in Great Lakes and 5 months (of a 6-12 month school) of music school in Virginia, spent 3.5 years in San Diego and 4 years back at Great Lakes. For a while, I had orders temporarily transferring me to a softball field, so I guess you could say I defended my country with a baseball bat! It was mostly 7 years or so of one-nighters, living out of vans and buses playing concerts for recruiting purposes, both with big bands and top-40 bands. Enough was enough, some of the idiots in charge drove me so crazy I HAD to get out and get a real job to save my sanity. I often wish I could have stuck it out to get the retirement, but it just got too political and I hate working for people with IQ's that are 1/2 of mine!!
