Robert's Story

NOW I am clearly not great on keeping my Classmates site up to date. So…….in 2019 We moved to Anchorage, Alaska. I took over as Chief Operating Officer for a privately owned company, recruited by a longtime industry friend. We loved Alaska. I reorganized the company which included terminating my friend of 20+ years for reasons I cannot go into, other than to say that the board of directors supported this decision. After this unenviable task and knowing I would bump into my former friend EVERYWHERE, after almost three years in Anchorage, we decided to move back to the lower 48 and have settled in the hill country area west of Austin, Texas. I’m back with CBRE, who I was with for six years when I was on Maui. I am General Manager of Hill Country Galleria, a 1.4 million square foot lifestyle and mixed use center in Bee Cave, or as some call it, “Me Cave”. Trust me, the Lambos, and Maybach’s run aplenty in BC. We are building a new home in Marble Falls, Texas which means apartment life for a while, but it will be worth it. OLD NEWS I have been in the shopping center industry for 41 years doing a mix of development, leasing and management. My career has taken me all over the country, developing or managing projects in Hawaii, Oregon, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New Orleans, Alabama, Washington D.C., North Carolina, California, back to Hawaii and finally back in Oregon in 2015. I was the General Manager of Lloyd Center, a 1.3 million sf enclosed mall in Portland going through an extensive redevelopment. I was also President of the Holladay Park Partnership, a non-profit that manages and underwrites the programs for Holladay Park in Portland. I was appointed by the Mayor of Portland to sit on a committee that provides oversight for the Portland Police Bureau, and co-chaired the subcommittee on mental health. I am married and brought three sons into the world. My oldest was in the Navy and is now with the DIA., and currently pursuing his Masters of Military Science at...Expand for more
the Army College in Leavenworth, Kansas. My youngest graduated from George Fox University with his Masters in Music Education, and teaches music at an elementary school in Oregon. I lost my son Steven in 2014 when he was 21, but he is with me every day and then some. My wife and I own a chocolate company on top of our respective careers, but we won't get into that. So far I have been to every state in the union except North Dakota ( have to get there someday), and have traveled to Guam, Palau, Truk, Yap, Mexico, Argentina, England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Iceland. In 2018, my wife, son and I went to the top of the German Alps. That was a bucket list item! Others in my bucket list include Italy, Portugal, and Ireland. When asked how my day is going, my answer is always "any better, I couldn't stand it. That's my mantra or mind set or whatever you want to call it. I was a kid from a broken home and out on my own at 16. Somehow I avoided the wrong things at the right times, had some great people guide and mentor me over the years and survived!, THEN If someone asked me what were you like growing up, I would have to say, "nondescript" or "unremarkable". It's tough growing up with a father who was an alcoholic, mentally and physically abusive asshole. But you can be the mould or break it and I chose the latter. My best friend? I had two besties. Jon Guss., not only my friend, but much loved by my family, especially my aunty Carol in Kahaluu. At Kalani I had a major crush on someone who is on Classmates.com, but who will remain nameless, because if nothing else, I am a gentleman. Mckenzie High School brought some new friends, one who I hung out with and collaborated in music with for several years. That would be Robert Stark, who lives somewhere in Missouri I think. He and I caught up with each other back in 2005 as I recall. Funny, there was a time when we were inseparable, but have not spoken in years. Must have been something I said!
