George's Story

Well, what can I say about the last decade and a half? It started out rocky, but everything pans out as it should in the end. I am currently living in Italy with my family and this is the second time in the last 6 years that I have done so. I am in the Navy still and I have to say it is getting tiring. Been here done that and it is all running together and getting rather old. Like the fridge you forget to empty out before you go on a summer-long vacation. Life on the other hand is still full of surprises and wonder. Don't know how that is possible seeing as I have lived the life of someone twice my age. Still so much that is still new and shiny. Which rocks once the "shiny-thing syndrome" kicks in. I am embracing my age and my experiences and I would not trade my successes or my failures for anything, as usually in the nature of life they lead to each other. Gotta stumble on that cracked sidewalk before you patch it up, right? Let's see, I have lived in Colorado, Washington (state), Maine, and Italy (now twice). I have been lucky and fortunate to have visited places like Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Georgia (country), Greece, France, Germany, U.K., Portugal, Spain, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Bahrain, U.A.E., and then the easy hops to Canada, Mexico, and Hawaii. I plan on getting out as soon as this current enlistment is done in 2012. That will put my time at 14 years doing this and I think that is a full enough belly. Hard to grow old gracefully when life is passing you by. I want and need to realize my own dreams instead of running around satisfying mission after mission. They point, we go. Again, tiresome. The organ grinders arm is about to fall off and the monkey has long since stopped dancing. Time for a new tune. (Anyone got a monkey I can borrow until then?) I have long been fascinated with the design and construction of houses and such. I know a place right there in my beloved Michigan where I can put the finishing touches on my degree and I already have a sharpened pencil in my hand. Enough about me, I mentioned a family, right? Well, I got married in July 1998 and our middle daughter showed up that following December. I was halfway around the world in the Persian Gulf when she was born, so that right there pretty much tops my sacrifices list. Too many to mention, but believe me, all the blood, sweat, and tears shed would give Michigan another Great Lake. Wonder if it would be named after me? Nevermind, not a glory hound. We have a total of two daughters, ages 14 and 9. The car is already getting ready for another driver and that is fine, because I get my Mini when we hit stateside again. We will more than likely end up in Florida or Virginia for my wrap up tour of duty, so I am already looking ahead. My daughters are every bit like their parents. Smart, tall, and versatile. Not to mention they will be knockin' em dead in High School, so unfortunately, I will need a pretty strong hockey stick, as guns are too much of a hassle. There is not a waiting period or background investigation to wield a handy piece lumber either. :) After a couple of years wherever we end up in Michigan, I am also going to be looking into coaching hockey. Since it is rather seasonal, I can undertake that in the slow days while my brain gets over "architects block". And since both professions deal with building something from the foundation up, hey, what a perfect fit into my reportoire. That might wrap up my life into the twilight years, so now you have the nutshell version of my PAST 14 years, and my Present, and my plans for my Future. See you at the 20 Year. 2014. Just noticed the little IDEA thing on the side over there and it is asking "How do you hope old friends remember you?" Well, now, let's try to scale through a couple of these and dish some answers. I hope my old friends remember me as I was, because I want to surprise them with how I now am. I was told by a teacher who shall remain nameless that I would most likely be dead by 21. Well 34 just punched me in the eye and I am still kicking and loving it. Next topic. Oh, a fill in the blanks question. Here we go. "I always wanted to be a (professional wrestler) when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a (stupid) idea. As it turns out, they were (right). NEEEEEEXT!! "How do you blow off steam? Describe your favorite way to relax." Well, I think about places I have seen and I close my eyes and imagine myself there again. Case in point, Venice. I was there and I was in the Piazza San Marco with hundreds of pidgeons. I walked into the middle of them and closed my eyes and just listened to them all around me. That one helps a lot. "What is the wildest thing you ever did in High School?" ummmmmmmm.....next question. OK, I skipped a few, but it started to sound like a sleepover. I was waiting for them to ask me if I'd like to play spin the bottle!! Next interesting question. "Parent? Share what you've learned from your kids." This is a good one. One of the biggest things I have learned is that my exterior hides a soft interior. I have a huge soft spot for my girls. I do a lot to put smiles on their faces and everything I do is worth it. They bring out the smooshiness in me. Meet them and you will see. OK, fine, I'll answer a cheesy one. "What happened to your first crush?" God only knows. Well, at least I took a stab at it. Ah, here's one. "What about you would surprise everyone at your high school reunion?" 1. Showing up. 2. Married with children and incredibly friggin' happy. 3. I would have so much to say considering I barely spoke in school. Have you actually read this far? OK, there's more. I have over 14,000 characters left on that little counter. Aww, man, last question on that little list of IDEAS. "Share a childhood memory you'll never forget." Going to the Disney park in Florida, (DisneyWorld or DisneyLand, not sure which), and I went into the Haunted Mansion with my Mother. I was 6 or 7 and was trying to act all brave as little boys do. I told my Mother to stay next to me and I would protect her. Well, the Mansion got the better of my imagination and I started screaming lik...Expand for more
e crazy. I wanted to get the heck out of there. Now I am hoping to take my kids through and see if they try the same thing with me. They are actually pretty tough, and not too "girly" whatever that means. Then there was this awesome time when I was around 7 or 8. Me and my brother had climbed this giant dirt hill in Mio, Michigan. We had this idea that we were going to race down the hill for the right to sit on Dads lap and drive the dunebuggy when we got down to the bottom. Well, we got about a quarter of the way down, succumbed to our momentum and pretty much did that head over heels thing the rest of the way down. Sky, dirt, sky, dirt, sky, dirt. I lost the race. Dizziness sucks. I want a rematch. Loser this time buys the beer, winner drinks it. I'll even throw in a couple of bags of Reeses Pieces for old times sake. That's that. 24 SEP 2010--More info as such is called an update. More of an amendment. Since I last typed anything on this page, I have been promoted and crashed my car. I also have daughter #3!!! What a surprise that was. I now have a grand total of three girls and me and my Wife celebrated 12 years of marriage together. Well, we'll celebrate as soon as I get home from being on this Ship for 5 months. I have seen some of the better places in Europe this time around and made friends with some of the most interesting people. Add Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Scotland to my list of places visited and that about wraps it up this go around. I hope to make it to the twenty year reunion and shock and amaze. I am currently working on a trick where I bend spoons with my mind. Actually I suck at that, and just look forward to showing up and seeing a lot of people staring at me and wondering who the heck I am. I'll probably tell people my name is Harry Potter, and when they laugh hysterically, I will tell them my real name....Luke Skywalker. Wait, heard that one? OK, how about Ronald Reagan. No? Then OK, I give up. My name is George Stradtner, I used to go to this school, and wish my time there was better spent. I could have been a better, more open and interesting person, and people would have dug me. Seeing how being quiet was a lot easier, I took that route, and (at the time) dispised those who ignored me. Now as an adult, I am wiser, and realize I wasn't ignored, but rather I never allowed anyone to really know me. Well, that was a weight on my shoulders. Now I don't have to act like Steve Buscemi in Billy Madison. I have no list of names to cross of and really look forward to showing all of you ME. The following is my newer answers to more IDEAS that were posted on this site. Enjoy. Fill in the blanks: If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have (a window seat), (gummi bears), and (internet) to be able to deal with the day-to-day. "Do you have a hero? Talk about where your inspiration comes from." Well, I would have to say My Father. I had a little bit of a rocky relationship with him growing up. But as a parent now, I see where he was coming from. he always just wanted the best for me, AND from me. So when he knew I was off somewhere getting into trouble or not getting as good of grades as he knew I could get he'd get a bit sore at me. And of course I did what most kids do in this situation and rebelled. "My parents hate me so much and they never just let me live my own life. They are so mean." All those typical statements. None of that was true. My parents were awesome when I look back on it now. And as far as my Father goes, I try to emulate him when raising my girls. I think I throw a lot more humor into the mix than he did, but he needed to be a lot more firm with me and my siblings than I have to be. Next question: "Sports. Reality TV. Pets. Share your obsessions." Well, HOCKEY!!! Reality TV is actually not reality anymore. More like people paid to act stupid and argue and "choose" their next mate. I especially hate the shows where people are trying to find love. Gimme a break. Get your asses out there and socialize. Unfortuately for America, we as a culture eat it all up. Pathetic. Pets. I currently only have two turtles. Squeegee and Schmoo!!! I won't be able to bring them back from Italy with us so I think we are talking about getting 2 dogs once we get settled in DC. More of a cat person, but hey, dogs are cool too and I can't wait to get them. If I had my say, I would get a Newfoundland. Those things are huge, which as life would have it is the downfall to NOT getting one at this time. I still have a baby in the house. Maybe when she is around 10 or 12 and big enough to know that pulling on its tail is not always going to work out as funny or cute. Next ?: "Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. Whats been your biggest surprise?" Well, i am married with 3 children. So there. Biggest shock is that I found someone and had htree children with them...and we are still together and HAPPY. Huge shock if you would have asked me this question in HS, I would have laughed and said, I am never having kids or getting married. My life is BS enough as it is. What a change maturing makes. NEXT!!! "Whats the weirdest job you ever had?" Well, I had a job in Denver that was just pushing a button so air would fill out the plastic in the molds to make milk jugs. N-E-X-T!!!! This is a good one. "Talk about your oldest friend--how you met and why you clicked." James Maiden. I met him in eighth grade science class and we ended up sitting at the same table at lunch. He was really quiet and so was I so most of our first conversations were "Dude." Followed by both of us nodding our heads. Then I started talking to him and making him laugh. Then one day we were hanging out and he just started talking like crazy!!! I was like WHATS GOING ON!!?? But that is where it started and I think it would have continued if I had stayed in Michigan, but I havent really stayed in contact with him or much of anyone since I left there for good in January of 1997. Much to my regret. But life has its ways and time will see it all come back together again. Well that is all for now and I will try to be better at keeping this thing up to date from now on. CIAO!!!!
