Maria's Story
Life
A Navy Junior, I followed my father to Hawaii in 1957-19, attending Radford High School. We were there when Hawaii made Statehood! From Hawaii, I went to Charlottesville, VA to attend St. Anne's Episcopal School for Girls, with Mrs. Thomas Jefferson Randaloph III as headmistress. That was a year.
I came to NKHS in 1960 as Maria Justice Moore, known as Ridie Moore, to live with my father, Quarters AA, Quonset Point. Graduating in 1962, I went to the Womens College of The University of North Carolina, now UNC Greensboro, Class of 1966. At UNCG, my Roomie was Jean Meyer and I'm now Class Webmaster. At NKHS I hung out with Mandy Maxfield, Buck James, Bobbie Reiss, Gail Hughes, Carla Thornton, Paul Davis, "Potts," and Paul Lundgren, among other classmates.I'd only been north of the Mason-Dixon line twice, so living in Rhode Island was a major adjustment. For one thing, it was cold! Living on the base at Quonset Point was also very different. John Sheridan and I had wonderful talks about the Civil War and he enjoyed having a bona fide Confederate descendent to harrass. My new friends and teachers took me in tow and I really loved my junior and senior years at NKHS. I owe a lot to George Sprague, who had dealt with Navy Admirals' kids before, and...Expand for more
who got me involved with school activities, to balance meeting US Presidents and Heads of State and serving as hostess for dinner parties with politico, CEOs, and Navy top brass. Whenever JFK flew in to go to the Summer White House, I was right there with my Dad. I earned a Master in Public Administration from Old Dominion University in 1984 -- God Bless Dr. Wolfgang Pindur and Dr. James Thompson (UNCG). I spent years in college research administration/development, so many I don't like thinking about them. I retired on permanent disability with Multiple Sclerosis in 1991 from UNCG Development Service.
I completed a second Masters, this one in Ancient History and PreColonial African History at UNCG, graduating, I hope, in 2002.
College
My freshman year in Jamison Dorm I roomed with someone from Burlington, DC and someone from Red Bank, NJ. Our NC roomie bailed out after on semester, went home, and got married. Jean and I stayed roomies for two years and she is still one of my dearest of friends.
When the stress of exams and life in general got to us, we'd ride up an down in the library elevator, all three floors. We'd play hopscotch on the brick paths, and sit on the grass burying acorns. Friendships evolve from strange beginngs! LOL
