Mariah's Story

Life After high school I attended Washington State University in Pullman and earned my business degree in Management Information Systems, Management, and Human Resources. I have worked as a Computer Support Analyst for several companies over the past 10 years and am currently happily employed as a stay at home mom back in Olympia. I married the love of my life in October of 2002. We met when our mutual friend Amber Devine introduced the two of us at a coffee shop. We had a beautiful wedding and a great Hawaiian honeymoon. We've been busy recently with our adventurous son, Thian, who was born in July of 2003. School I was definitely a misfit in high school. Until 5th grade I lived on a farm and went to school in a very small town. Transplanting to Olympia, though it is also small, was a shocker for me--for school I would don flannel shirts, hand me down couderoy pants and barn boots while my classmates wore flourescent Bennetton sweatshirts and jelly braclets. The parents gave the standard "You go to school to learn, not for a fashion show" response when I would complain about a wardrobe update. Turns out I made do though. . . I met some really wonderful people being a misfit. A few of my high school friendships are still going strong, taking on more of a feeling of family than of just friends. I would do it all over again just the same, because it brought me to where I am today and gave me such long lasting friendships. My only regret is not photographing the actual school more. I was gone at college for maybe a year and came back to find a high school I never attended--where is the "Hello Walk" and the cafeteria decorated by someone who was under the influence? I miss the old Olympia high school and regret that is it is just example now of how "You can't go home." College I went to school at Washington State University but never had the opportunity to live on campus (somewhat of a regret because I didn't make as strong of friendships). My first year I lived with my sister who was also a student there. After she graduated, ...Expand for more
I rented a room in my parent's place to various people. . . once to a very interesting person. She actually one day stopped returning home. I received a phone call from her dad saying he was going to pick up her stuff. I asked if she was alright and was told she was going to have counseling for 6 months. Turns out "counseling" was jail time as she had tried armed robbery of a bank near Pullman. Yikes! Other than that college was typical. . . lots of studying, lots of partying. I had an on-again, off-again boyfriend throughout most of my time there. He taught me a lot about life, looking at the big picture, and helped me decide on my career path. The relationship ended up being off-again permanently, but I'm still thankful for that period of time in my life. Workplace Let's see. . . my first real job was as a Page at the State Capitol, first for the House of Representatives and then for the Senate. I worked my senior year at an accounting firm after school. I've worked at McDonald's twice, Farmer's Insurance (where I quit because of harassment), and then for a Printing and Type service while in college. I worked in data enty and then as a parking control officer in college as well. My last year of school I also interned with Boeing (during the summer) and was an undergraduate teacher's aide and peer advisor. After graduating I returned to the very same desk I had at Boeing as an Intern and worked there a year an a half before I followed by original Boeing supervisor to another company called CareWise. That company went through 2 parents during the 6+ years I was there. It became steeped in beauracracy and I had to relocate to Olympia in October of 2004, where I sought work for 7 months before finding a temporary position with City of Lacey. From there I bounced to the Geek Squad with Best Buy, City of Tacoma and finally found my place at home taking care of my wonderful son. I also work part-time as an administrative aid for my husband's business and as a subsitute instruction for the family playtime programs at City of Olympia.
