Armand's Story

Life Served 9 1/2 years in the navy. My first ship was homeported in Sasebo, Japan where I met and married my wife Naoko. On Aug.4, 2023 we will have been married for 54 years and have 2 grown children and 2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter and 1 great-granddaughter and 1 great-grandson. I spent 8 years in WestPac homeported in Japan and I achieved the rank of Signalman First Class. I was PMO at NRRF Kamiseya, Japan when I left the navy for college in Graceville, FL in 1977. After college and seminary (New Orleans) I served as a Southern Baptist missionary in Rota, Spain and later a home missionary in Caribou, Maine. I served as pastor of Riverside Baptist Church in Chilhowie, Virginia for almost 8 years and served as pastor of Sedley Baptist Church in Sedley, Virginia for three years. I was called to serve as the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Misawa, Japan. We were hit with the bad earthquake and tsunami of 3/11/11 but only suffered minor damage. We lived 1 1/2 miles from the ocean but we were about 75 feet above sea level so the tsunami did not reach our house. The church is made up of U.S. military personnel and their families, and we were active in the disaster relief efforts. We were in Misawa for 3 1/2 years and moved to Kitakyushu, Japan and later to Fukuoka, Japan. While we were in Fukuoka, I was called to serve as an associate pastor in English language ministries at the Hirao Baptist Church. When our visas expired in June 2014, we returned to the States to be near family. In April 2015 I was called to be the pastor of Newsoms Baptist Church in Newsoms, VA. In September 2015 Naoko and I returned to Japan for a month long visit to see family and friends. We traveled all over Japan on the bullet trains and had a great time. Naoko and I visited her family and our friends in Japan again for a month from Oct.16-Nov.16, 2017. This time we went to help take care of her 90 yr old mother. We had a great time seeing old friends and family. It was a good trip but tiring and jet lag is rough. I don't bounce back like I could 20 yrs ago. I retired from the pastoral ministry on 1 May 2019 and moved back to Chilhowie, VA to be closer to family. We have a number...Expand for more
of friends in the area and it almost feels like we came back home. We are members of Riverside Baptist Church and I serve as a deacon. I have some opportunities to preach, which is something I really love doing. I miss being a pastor but I am involved in a ministry of providing furniture and household items to families in need. I also serve on the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard where we render military honors at the funerals of veterans. We keep looking forward to see what plans God has in store for us as the adventure continues. College My wife, Naoko, and I started school Sep.77 and both went full time. During my time in school I worked as a wood cutter and did farm work and building construction/destruction as opportunities came up. I took a number of music classes as electives and sang in the school choir for two years. I graduated with a Bachelor of Theology degree in Jan.81 then went to seminary in New Orleans where we were involved with mission work to the Japanese living in the New Orleans area. I received my MDiv and after seminary we moved back to Graceville for Naoko to finish her work. After that we went to Spain for four years. Military I was a navy signalman which involves visual communications. I used flashing light, semaphore, and flags for signals and had to know honors and ceremonies for special events. I loved working outside on the bridge and knowing everything going on. I enjoyed being at sea but there were times when we hit cold, wet and snowy weather that made it rough. In six years of sea duty I served on 6 ships. I decommissioned three of them and was TAD on the Niagara Falls for four months. We spent a lot of time in and out of Vietnam. Most all my ships were small with crews of 40-200 so we were able to visit ports that the larger ships couldn't go to and that was great. I finally went on shore duty for three years at a communications base on the outskirts of Yokohama, Japan where I served as Provost Marshal for 1 1/2 yrs and was in charge of vehicle control and registration. It was great duty. I made first class while at Kamiseya, and it was there I felt God calling me into the ministry and left the navy to attend college and seminary.
