Gene's Story
Life
A bit about me:
I started school in Betteravia, California. . We walked to school in those early days.
When school was dismissed we ran home. my 3rd garde teacher was Mrs. Stevens.
When we graduated from the 3rd grade we then transferred to Main Street School, Santa Maria, California, and began riding the bus. My 4th grade teacher at Main Street School was Miss Graham.
Main Street School is now the site of a bank in Santa Maria.
Boundarylines changed and all the kids in Betteravia who were not attending high school were transferred to Orcutt Union School. There, we stayed until we graduated from the 8th grade, and transferred to Santa Maria High School.
I graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1962. I wasn't on the honor rolls or anything like that. Just another ordinary kid. This ordinary kid went to work and went to Alan Hancock College, graduating from AHC in 1965.
1965 - 1967 attended Fresno State College, Fresno California.
1967 - 1970 United States Army: Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Gordon, Georgia; Republic of Viet Nam; Fort Lewis, Washington.
Met my future wife on a blind date while serving my 2nd tour at Fort Lewis.
When I married Marcia (mar - see - ahh) 42 years ago, I made her a promise to take her back home, to Washington, when the time was right. Well, one day, about 5 years ago she informed me, that the time had come for that...Expand for more
move.
We have 1 Son.
We got a u-haul truck and made that move.
We are now retired on a scrap of ground that is surrounded by ash, firs, cedars and maples. The Newahcum river flows just 1.9 miles away. It is just an over grown creek that flexes it muscle every few years. This year was one of those years.
The trees have grown to a height that now blocks our view of Mt. Rainier( 70 miles distant). Neither can we see the grumpy Mt. St. Helens (a mere 35 air miles away, but, HEY! we are happy.
Currently classified as a retired workaholic so I Volunteer. I was the Assistant Coordinator for Disabled American Veterans (DAV). As of January 12, 2009, my title changed from volunteer to employee, and I am now the Hospital Service Coordinator, however, some of my duties have not changed My chores include coordinating Veterans needing a ride to their V.A. appointments with a driver to get them there. I no longer drive for the DAV. All of this action takes place at the Pugent Sound Health Care System, American Lake Divison of Veterans affairs, Tacoma, Washington. This is who I am, this is what I do! This service, I may add, is free to all Veterans and their spouses.
In December 2008, It has been the snowiest winter in 40 years.
In February, I was elected Commander of DAV 29 in Centralia, Washington.
As of January 21st 2011, I will retire as HSC at American Lake.
