Buford's Story

I began my schooling at Mill Creek School in 1943 and graduated in 1955. My father was Ernie. He was a successful farmer and also drove a school bus. He died driving his school bus on March 30, 1953. I found him in his bus that afternoon. He was a great father and I was blessed to have a Christian Dad. My precious classmates from 1st grade to the 12th grade were a great strength to me when Dad died. They honored me by electing me their class president as a Sophomore, Junior and Senior. Some have already passed on to their reward. I am eternally thankful for their love for me. I have attempted to keep in touch with them all these years. After graduation I enrolled in college at Arizona State in Tempe, AZ. After 3 semesters I joined the Army Security Agency and spent 22 months in Asmara, Eritrea. On the airplane back to the states in December 1959, the pilots were only a few years older than me. I asked them how I could become a pilot. They advised me to go back to college and go through ROTC. I had no GI Bill so that was good advice. I re-enrolled at Arizona State, got a job with Western Airlines at Sky Harbor Airport and rode my bike back and forth to college. I got my private pilot license and then went into the Air Force as a 2nd Lt. in the first experimental all-jet pilot training class with 28 other men. I finished first in military bearing, 4th in flying skills, 12th in academics and received the Community Service Award. I graduated 6th overall in my class of 24. I chose the B-52 and then flew B-52's over Viet Nam from 1965 to 1967. I was a Generals Aide from 1967 to 1969 and then entered the AF Active Reserve Forces. Aircraft I flew in the AF were: T37, T33, T29, T39, U3A and...Expand for more
several others as co-pilot. I retired a full Colonel in 1992 with 35 years of service. In 1969 I joined Delta Air Lines as a pilot. I flew the DC8, DC9, CV880, L1011, L100,B727, B737, B757, B767 & B767ER. From 1989 to 1994 I was the Boeing 737-100/200/300 Fleet Manager. In 1990 management appointed me the Boeing 737 Glass Cockpit Project Pilot. This task involved representing Delta to Boeing in the development of the new B737-400.500/600/700/800/900 aircraft. I served in that capacity until April 1994. Delta also tasked me to develop a new Re-current Interactive Ground School. The Ground Training Department assigned me two men, Flight Training assigned two First Officers and we began the project. There were about 10 line pilots who also were of great assistance as we developed a program for the B-737. It was so successful Delta petitioned the FAA to use the program for all our aircraft fleet and was approved. The next year the FAA mandated all U.S. Carriers to use the program our team developed. I completed my career with Delta as an International Pilot in 1997. As a Christian, I have pastored churches from 1980 to the present. I have many stories of angelic protection and intervention in my life from the age of 4 on the farm, to putting out engine fires on my aircraft in my flying career, to protection from evil forces as recent as March 10, 2013. I have not mentioned my mother. Mom, (Beatrice whom everyone called "Sweet Bea") passed on to be with the Lord in 2000. Mom was a loving Mother who supported me with her love and prayers all my life. I am so blessed to know beyond any doubt that my Dad and Mom are waiting for me to finish the race. If you want to contact me use classmates.
