Richard's Story

Life How lucky we all were to have a high school that nurtured us so that we would succeed. We had first-class teachers who set us a fine example of academics and good character. Special praise is saved for Mr. Harlan Ruby who taught us to learn for the sheer joy of learning. And special praise is given to Miss Cleo Hurley who taught us to read critically and brought life into the so-called dead language of Latin. These teachers and many others at our school brought joy to our lives by widening our horizons. Truly, a gift that keeps on giving. I appreciate them now more than ever as I enter my sunset years. ducation. I wish the young students today were so privileged. I am very grateful for all these blessings. In my wildest dreams I never thought that the USA would deteriorate politically and morally as much as it has. I am deeply disheartened by the greed and selfishness so prevalent now in my later years. I am bewildered by the lack of fiscal discipline of our public servants. I long for days of old when it was understood that one had to work for all that one obtained both in the academic arena and in the business world. I still have hope that all will be well eventually and that a reprioritization of values will take place and a university education will be open to those who merit it. Education that once more will be free.
