William (Pete)'s Story

Life Executive Profile: William B. Lee, Ph.D. Dr. William B. “Pete” Lee is the retired Emeritus Executive Director of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, the largest maritime museum on the American West Coast. Dr. Lee held this position with the City of Los Angeles from 1986 until 2003. Prior to joining the City of Los Angeles he served as Executive Director of the Charles Bowers Museum of Cultural Arts in Santa Ana, California, and Executive Director and Curator of Anthropology of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. Before entering a doctoral program in Anthropology at UCLA he served in the US Navy, was Chief Medical Photographer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Associate Producer of the Medical Information Project of the University of Southern California School of Medicine, and Producer/Editor at the UCLA Latin American Studies Experimental Media Center. He is presently on the adjunct faculty of the University of Victoria, B.C. Canada as well as at several Los Angeles area universities and is a visiting critic for the University of Southern California School of Architecture. The son of a career US Army Officer, Dr. Lee attended schools throughout the US and in Japan before graduation from high school in Greensboro, NC. Dr. Lee attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and the University of Southern California. He received Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Anthropology from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He has participated in postgraduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley; Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; and the University of Colorado, Boulder. zing in the social/technical adaptation of maritime based societies and the documentation of anthropological research. He has conducted field research in the Central Pacific, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela. He is Past President of the California Association of Museums, is an advisor for the California Council for the Humanities, and the Western Association of Aviation Museums. He is a graduate of the Getty Trust Museum Management Institute (MMI) at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Colorado Museum Management Program; and the Advanced Museum Management Program of the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany. Dr. Lee has served as a consultant for the Smithsonian Institution Museum of the American Indian, the US Department of the Interior Channel Islands National Park and the San Francisco National Maritime Historic Park. He is a senior professional in the American Association of Museums’ Museum Assessment Program (MAP). He has many voice-over credits in film and television, is a popular public speaker, and is the “voice” of the SS LANE VICTORY, WWII historic merchant marine museum ship. He is an honorary member of the Los Angeles Yacht Club, and serves on the advisory board of the American Sail Training Association. In addition to his interest in maritime history, oceanography, navigation, sailing and traditional watercraft, he is an experienced diver in SCUBA and heavy (hardhat) equipment, as well as an instrument and seaplane rated private pilot. He is married to Dr. Mary E. Lee, retired Community College President and Vice Chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District. The Drs. Lee live in Southern California’s Cahuilla Valley East of Los Angeles.
