James's Story
Life
I graduated from McLean High School in 1970. I went to UVA from 1970-1974 and graduated in 1974, majoring in physics. Studied at Harvard from 1975-1978. Earned Ph.D. there in 1978. Met Sally Diane Garmer from Des Moines, Iowa at Harvard Chapel, Married in 1978. Worked at NIST from 1979-1986 in Gaithersburg, MD. Transfered to NOAA in Boulder Colorado in 1986. Have four sons, Jamie 28, Richard 26, Drew, 24, and Christopher 20. Our oldest son graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder majoring in psychology with a minor in history. He works as contractor for Bank of America in their home mortgage department in Broomfield, CO. Our second oldest son graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison majoring in mechanical engineering. He is currently a project engineer at Gerdou Ameristeel in St. Paul, MN. ourth son, is a junior at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY majoring in Geology.. I am in charge of a global network for monitoring the halocarbons and nitrous oxide around the world. Developed four airborne instruments for NASA to sample the air for ozone-depleting and greenhouse gases. Done some consulting for government agencies on unique measurment techniques of gases. Working in the same field as childhood friends like Joe Jordan from McLean High and Richard Stimpfle from old McLean neighborhood. Hobbies include sport cars, motorcycles, planes, computers, travel, high-tech gadgets, and stock market investments. Interested in hearing from old friends from high school and UVA.
School
I went to Franklin Sherman Elementary. Attended Cooper and Longfellow Intermediate School. I hated Cooper because I did terrible at Math. I graduated from McLean High School in 1970.
Workplace
I worked at NOAA in Boulder, CO. I am a group chief in charge of trace gas measurements. We have over 12 employees and instruments around the world.
