Maria's Story

Life Brian Turner (fellow classmate) and I have been married 14 years. Our blended family includes 5 children and 10 grandchildren with #11 due any time now. Being a Nana is the best part of my life! School Wow. This is harder than I thought it would be . . .my school biography. How does one sum up so many years and tears in this little white space? And what to share, what to keep private? Who is going to read this, anyway?? OK, jumping in . . .Some good memories first: 1) Mrs. Sheeley's French class. Gosh, she made it so much fun. She is one of the teachers who molded me into the kind of teacher I am today. 2) Mrs. Abma's English class. Another teacher I've patterned myself after. Ignore the preposition at the end of that clause! 3)Homeroom, senior year. Tom was in there. Most of the time, that was a good thing. 4)The Senior Wall. After watching the seniors before me stand there every morning, it was fun to finally get to do it, myself! 5) Ring Day. Russell rammed a poor little Bug, and it rained and rained and rained . . . and I had a little wine(!) Mark was my designated driver, with his Pepsi. We always had fun together. 6) Senior Cut Day. Poor ol' Mr. Wright had his hands full with us! 7) Junior Prom. I took Mark and chicken pox. At least I wasn't contagious anymore, but I looked like crap. Oh, well; Mark thought I looked gorgeous. We had a ball, anyway. 8) Senior Prom. I had a magical night, even though at the end of it Mark burst my bubble when he said he STILL didn't want to get back together. I understand, now, but then it was hard. It was still a fantastic night, though. 9) Pep rallies! They just aren't like they used to be. There is so little school spirit anymore. We cheered until we were hoarse, for the BULLDOGS! 10) Drama Club, all the plays and rehearsals and stuff. That is probably my best overall memory. I loved my first role, in "Play it Again, Sam"; kissing Jeff in front of all those people was so funny, because he was so shy!! It was such a cool play. "Twelve Angry Jurors" was hectic b/c we switched parts all around near the end, but OK b/c I knew everyone's lines, anyway; it's just the idiot savant in me! "Arsenic and Old Lace" was hilarious . . . wonder what ever happened to the tape they made of it? Gosh, I'd love to see that. We messed up so many times and covered so well! And all the "old" people had clouds of baby powder billowing behind their heads! Mr. Luchka (gosh, am I spelling that right?) was the absolute best. He was so laid-back, but he really knew how to direct us and get the best out of us. All of my experiences set the stage for my being involved in theatre at Western, and I hope to be in community theatre someday when I retire. I have no time, now! Overall, high school was so much fun and so much heartache. I wouldn't go through it all again, but it is fun to look back at the highlights. I wasn't the most popula...Expand for more
r girl or the most beautiful, but I KNOW I turned out all right! I have a wonderful husband, daughter, and grandchildren, and a nice home and friends to make me smile. I became a teacher, just like I always said I would, and since 1986 I've been a really good one! Although there were some really rough spots, especially during our senior year, I can look back on high school fondly and know that I'm still friends with the people who were a big part of my life then. I can't believe almost 40 years have passed! Fairdale folks, come to the reunions! It's fun to see everyone!! College Go Toppers! Western was the best school . . . close enough to home that I could go back when I wanted to (and even when I didn't really want to), but far enough that I felt like I was on my own. I loved living in Bates Runner Hall, even though we didn't have air conditioning. We were a little family, especially when I was on the first floor. I met my best friend in the whole world on the first floor of Bates; she lived down the hall and around the corner from me. The English department was hard, but fun. Dr. Little's English Grammar was one of the most challenging classes I've ever taken! He was an excellent teacher. My favorite was Dr. Heldman, though. I took all of his classes, I believe. I love Victorian literature because of him. Parties, parties, parties . . . beer and pizza in the dorm (shhhhh!) . . . skipping 8:00 classes . . . going out to pick up cookies or brownies or something to bake when the roads were hazardous with snow and ice . . . almost getting my car towed because I left it in the 10 minute zone . . . my friend, Darrell (WHERE ARE YOU?? UPDATE! FOUND HIM ON FACEBOOK!) . . . the theatre department and "House at Pooh Corner" . . . NEA/SP and traveling as state president . . . so many fun memories will always be with me. I wouldn't go back and do high school over again, but I think I would like to relive college a bit! Workplace My first job was at South Park Country Club, and I suppose my title was, generously, "Tennis Pro Assistant." I signed people in and out at the courts, took care of the shuffleboard equipment, uhhhh . . . swept up a bit, watched some TV, worked on my tan . . . it was boring as heck, unless somebody dropped by to see me! Charlie Hartman stopped by one night after he got off work in the kitchen, and as he was pulling out of the parking lot, he hit my car! Mark broke up with me there, I think . . . I associate the breakup with being at work, somehow . . . anyway, I added myself to the SPCC list because I'm already on all my school lists (where I've taught) and Classmates.com wasn't recognizing that I had a work profile. I always wanted to be a radio DJ or radio advice guru . . .maybe someday . . . for now I'll stick to being a teacher. Update: I retired in 2013, but I never really retired, and now I'm back full time. The kids need me, and I need them, too.
