Cathy's Story

Hi Everyone ! Well here we are, geez, what a wonderful life! Looking for my Forever Partner, Gentlemen only please ! I wish I could see you more often, maybe at the next reunion May 2017, if you all show up ! I am on the Reunion Committee again this year with a FINE group of Classmates, Finney Classes 1969-1975, Also I am on the Reunion Committee this year for the 50 Year St. Matthews Celebration , well its the Catholic Kids that graduated in 1972 from Bishop Gallagher, Notre Dame, Austin, all the Catholic Kids that attended these schools and transferred to Public Schools too, Denby , Finney, Harper Woods, Grosse Pointes North and South... The date for this Reunion is Saturday Sept. 15. Stay tuned for more information! I am in Prescott, Arizona, my son is now 27. Yes, I had a much later start than almost all of you! My Dad just turned 89 this year, and still a formidable man ! He is living in Troy with my youngest Brother and my Sister in Law. He came to Arizona and Danced with me on my 50th birthday, (he was 75 !) , all my brothers are great, 3 in Detroit, 2 Engineers and a CAD, and one in Oregon, retired... My son, Matt, had Kidney Cancer when he was a year old, been through that hell with him, now on to living life. Talk about interruptions in life, live everyday as if it is the best, live, love and laugh, because we never know what God has decided for us. My Son, last July 28th, 2017, was driving to an 11am doctor appointment, on one of our winding mountain road, 5 lane, speed limit 40 mph, And a woman , a few years younger that me, supposedly was off supervised probation , midnight the previous evening, and hit him Head On 40mph on a curve. Of course impaired people either bite it or bounce and walk away. She walked to blow and bloodwork and then to jail, while I got the call, rushed to the scene to see my son put in a helicopter, airlifted to a Trauma Hospital in Phoenix. We rushed down to Phoenix, to spend 8 days, while he was repaired...and to top it off, I always have a Blessed Father Solanus Casey relic with me, had it when Matt had Cancer and had it then..to make it even better, a Brother from Detroit came into his room, And I mentioned Father Casey, He was from Holy Redeemer Seminary, and had a very nice,, long conversation with Matthew, about things a 30 year old male would talk about.. My heart soared. We are not actively Church members, but what is in your heart counts. Matthew was uplifted, and a few days later he was sent by ambulance to a Rehabilitation Hospital up here in Prescott for 2 weeks, then home with Rehabilitation PT and OT for 4 months. I am blessed, many people are not as lucky as I am. I remember when Matt was diagnosed with Cancer at Beaumont in Royal Oak after surgery, and I jumped up and down in the Childrens Waiting room , with parents waiting to hear about their kids tonsils, broken arm....I was so happy he had a certain Cancer and did not have the really bad Cancer. They saw I was elated, baffled them, then they found out why...humbling experience, and they even sent restaurant dinners to our room... I was lucky then too, and of course, so was my Son. Then I remember those parents in the Cancer Group who were not as...Expand for more
lucky as I was. I became friends with Sergei Federov and the other Russian Red Wings, they visited often because the Children of Chernobyl were patients also. They played with Matthew because babies understood all language, especially those Chernobyl Children with Cancer. They played house , sat and sang Russian songs to Matthew while remembering parents that sang to them. The Red Wings were their Angels, Language, foods and games. Bless the Red Wings. Now on to more fun things here.. We go to Vegas, it's only 3 hours to 4-1/2 hours drive, depending on who drives! . Vegas calls us a few times a year, and occasionaly on the spur of the moment. We meet my family every October for a week at Vegas, very cool. Although we only stay about 4 days and we've had enough Vegas. My family also comes here for our World Oldest Rodeo on 4th of July, we all like the Bull Riding. Prescott has four seasons, although not alot of snow, everyone here is amazed and awed by snow and they want to go to Flagstaff to ski, I just watch em, and laugh. We can see Flagstaff from our deck, it's 100 miles away. Amazing. Late spring is Monsoon time, oh, how I love the Monsoons, we can sit on our deck and watch 5 different Thunder Storm events at once, including one directly over our home, walls of water, thunder and lightening, the occasional wildfire sparked by the storms, the air tankers flying directly overhead full of slurry which is dumped on the wildfires. So, we are content, with all the usual life interrupting episodes, but we get right back into the content thing, and all is well. Oh yeah, this is mainly a Cowboy town, I just got my first Stetson, but I don't know if I'll wear it. P.S. Cats are great, but they work here, they get rid of all the rattlesnake food (mice,packrats..) and let us know where the snakes are! We don't go to Mexico anymore, too dangerous, although all those people here who "own" homes in Mexico beg to differ ! Actually you really don't "own" a home, you can build and hope to lease the land from the government for 99 years, but as the government changes, you never know, they could take it all away. So, I have a 40ft Class A Motorhome, driver wanted! Well, looks like I am coming home to Michigan with my son. My time in Arizona has almost ended. Another chapter in my life, I have worked hard and raised a fine son. I was honored to be one of the instrumental arrangers that coordinated services for Arizona's Firefighter/Hotshot tragedy. I worked and cried with some of the finest Men and Women serving our Country both in Law Enforcement and Fire Service. When a crisis strikes, there are people that stand up and jump in. That's how I was raised. There also comes a price. The stress had broken my marriage, that's OK, So we divorced.. I am so ready to move forward and get out and enjoy our world. I want to sit on the docks again, watch those freighters, maybe fish, see the US/Canada fireworks, and hopefully my Son will meet his match and I would like some grandchildren, I just want happiness for him ! Probably visit here when those Michigan Winters are just too long and relentless. Maybe I might become a Snowbird.....and write a few more stories. Cathy
