Sue's Story

Workplace I entered the work world at Rheem Mfg., obtaining my job through Dottie Lambert in 1955, after meeting, becoming engaged in 1955 and marrying in Feb. '56. Continued with Rheem through a buyout by Aerojet General. Left work to raise our two children (Brad & Colleen) in 1960 and returned to work with Downey Unified School District in 1968. Our son, wife & grandchildren live in La Mirada, CA. and daughter & husband in Lake Mary, Fl. Of course, they are all close to perfect! They visit every year and love our choice for retirement. Retired from DUSD in 1997, moved to the Olympic Peninsula, WA. My husband and I found our paradise by the Strait of Juan De Fuca, at the base of the Olympic Mts. Crab boat, living in a rural environment with beautiful trees. Volunteering, great friends, no traffic and it's our "peace on earth." I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. In 10 years, I hope to be alive. I'm going to get there by taking care of myself. I love life!! My oldest friend was my sister, Pat. She was there to support me when I needed her, we were very close. She died at age 42 of cancer and I still miss her! I was blessed with my kid sister, Pamela, who I am very close to. I call her my daughter/sister. Traveling on a train to San Bernardino and San Francisco, with my sister. We stayed with our aunts & uncles. Big family and lot's of fun!! My p...Expand for more
ositive attitude comes from marrying the right guy and living a 1950 lifestyle. Husband first, then kids and family. Our pets have been our obsession, after our treasured family. We adopted a Blue Heeler/Terrierwhen our CA dog passed on. Her name is Babe and she is devoted to us, as we are to her. To be truly happy I recommend retirement to the North West with one's partner. No traffic, town of 5-6000, between the Strait of Juan DeFuca & the awesome mountains of Olympic National Park. My first crush was Jim Parris in grammar school through high school. He married a beautiful woman and I married my handsome husband. Jim and I traded pictures of our bird feeders and retirement stuff on classmates.com. I am back in jeans & t-shirts, which is one of the reasons I love the North West rural living! I have volunteered for our local police department (VIPS) for over 10 years. Have plaques and awards for this. We also volunteer for the Fish & Wildlife who manage the Dungeness Spit (longest spit in the world). Plus my husband helps out the local hatcheries, saving the salmon when he's not catching the Dungeness crabs in our boat. I don't look backwards but to the future. However, if I could go back, I would marry my guy first, then get my degree, be a teacher and have my family. A childhood memory that I never forgot is being Honored Queen of Job's Daughters, editor of school paper and all the supportive friends I made during my Downey school days.
