Chuck's Story

Life I've been married to Jan Baird of Ohio fame now for 20 years and have two beautiful daughters. We moved to Bellville 10 years ago from Katy and really enjoy the small town atmosphere. I'm a Past Master of Bellville Masonic Lodge and both of my daughters are members of the Rainbow Girl Assembly we have here. When I become independently wealthy, we plan on moving back to Conroe! :^) School I loved Mrs. Dodd probably the most, she was a real sweetheart as an English teacher. Mrs. Arno probably inspired me the most, especially when I was convinced that Chemistry was going to be the death of me! John Brekel and Pete Saunders were my two best friends. John now lives in Kountze, north of Beaumont and is still as crazy as he ever was, but I don't know what happened to Pete. Does anybody else? Jane Wells......did you ever keep up with him? Jane and Lisa Adams were probably my two best girl (female) friends! Military Being color blind, I wasn't able to enter the electronics field like I wanted - I had plans of doing 4 years active, then going to college, getting my commission, and becoming a pilot - so I told my recruiter I didn't want to push paper for 4 years and I liked working with my hands, so he talked me into becoming a Machinist's Mate.....yes, I would do things diff...Expand for more
erently if I had a second chance, but I still enjoyed most of my time in. I made a "WestPac" on the Joeseph Strauss, DDG-16. We pulled into Pearl Harbor in July and did a stint in the yards, after which time I transferred into 2nd Class Diving School on Subbase Pearl. But the color blind thing caught me again and I was yanked while in school. So I wrote my Congressman and got AC&R "C" School out of it in San Diego, CA. From there I went to Alameda, CA. to the USS Hector, AR-7, an Auxiliary Repair ship and into the "Repair Company" Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Pneumatic, and Hydraulics Shop. Northern California was great. I had an aunt in the Oakland Hills that I lived with for my last year and had a great time. I got to go to the Pneumatic and Hydraulics "C" School on Treasure Island while there too! I got out in July '81, worked in the Oil Patch for awhile, and then went to work for Houston Trane Commercial A/C Co., the was hired by ARCO Oil & Gas Co. as an HVAC specialist. None of which I would have been able to do without my Naval career! I did another 8 years in the Naval Reserves before getting fed up with the whiners who didn't want to do their jobs. I cherish the many friends I made while in and all the good times we had. I wouldn't trade THAT for anything!!
