Marci's Story

I always wanted to be a mom when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a wonderful idea. As it turns out, they were right. I am the mother of 3 handsome boys - ages 20, 16 and 10. For the past 16 years, I was a legal assistant at the fifth largest law firm in the world (President Obama and his wife met where I work). I was the assistant to the former Illinois Solicitor General who was nominated by President Obama as a federal judge for the Northern District of Illinois. On June 28, 2010, he was confirmed to this position and was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Kennedy on September 30, 2010. During the same time I was the assistant to the future federal judge, I was also the assistant to the future US Attorney for the State of Utah. On the same assignment, I also assisted a general litigator (white collar crime). What an honor to work for such prominent figures in our nation's government. My life has been very rewarding except for a few bumps in the road which, I believe, has made me a better person. I have a strong faith in God. I have been there for my oldest son's liver transplant which drew media attention across the country as it being the first side by side liver transplant in the history of Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago with one donor and two recipients. The donor's family gave a generous gift to our family and the Sroka family by saving two children. Many thank yous to my employer for understanding and giving me emotional support along the way. I could not have asked for better parents who have always been there for me and still continue to be. I a member of a wonderful church in Lake Forest which spiritually leads my path. I am financially sound with a great future ahead of me - thanks to God's love for me. I belong to a health club Equinox, in my neighborhood which offers palates, swimming, spinning classes, etc. The wildest thing I ever did in high school was hide in a closet with four friends who were supposedly housesitting for a friend. The friend gave the key to my friend. The owner's oldest son came home and was going to call the police because someone was in the house. I guess we weren't supposed to be there after all. We ran into a closet. My friends and I still laugh about this to this day. My hero is my mother - for all the patience in the world and love she has given me. She was my best friend as well. Our family friend, Anita, served as my mentor. Anita was great with business advice. She was the Manager of the Federal Information Center at the Federal Building in Chicago. issue, I would run to her office and ask for advice. I have lived in California with my first husband when we got married out of high school. For the past 30+ years have lived in Illinois. I remarried in 1990 to a man who is the father of my three sons. We divorced in 2007. I am currently living in Highland Park, IL and own a home in Poplar Grove which I currently rent to the best tenant in the world. He cleans my gutters, maintains my tractor, landscapes, built stairs to the back of the house, etc. My biggest surprise in life is that I would have never thought of myself as being divorced twice. I grew up in a Christian home where you just learned to work out problems. The men I seem to have married can't handle problems but find it easier to just leave. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to St. James, an organization through my church who helps families in need. then spend the rest on paying off the house, bills and college for my boys and retire by doing charity work. My current age is 53. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be slowing down. I was so completely wrong. My life is just beginning and I look forward to dancing with my sons at their wedding! I always thought that having a college degree made you more respectable. I have learned that its life experiences and the way you treat others gain respect. I am now working for a renewable energy company. During my interview, the CEO told me that my work experience is something that is worth more than an education. To quote him, "you send a fool to college, he'll come back an educated fool." I am now the company's Corporate Office Administration Manager. My best friend would tell you I'm a God-fearing woman, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as an emotionally strong woman which only comes from God's love. My oldest and dearest friend is Laura Streder. She lived down the street from me. We met through our brothers. We still keep in touch. We clicked for our love for God. Her mother used to take us to Vacation Bible School and Awana. It was such a blast! Wonderful childhood memories! My first job was at Brown's Chicken in Northlake, where I got paid very minimal to remember. What I remember most about it is one night our boss left one of us in charge where it became party city. We got in trouble the next day. A childhood memory that I would never forget would be all the wonderful people who came into my life, loved me for who I am and the biggest reward is that they are still in my life today - best friends and family ever!
