Kimberley's Story

Life Well, I put down that I drive a mini van. But, I don't really drive, in fact, they dont' allow me to drive. Something about in the interest of public safety. So, my darling husband drives me around and when I need to go somewhere locally, the gimp mobile picks me up. I have what is called Peripheral Demyelinating Neuropathy. Its a fanct term for saying that my nerve fibers are losing their myelin sheaths. What that means is that sometimes I can walk and the other times, you'd think I was drunk. It also affects my hands so sometimes I'll throw things at you. People usually stay far away when I weild a knife in the kitchen. Profound fatigue also accompanies this, so we usually live off of Omaha Steaks and Home Bistro Meals. Hey, it sure beats washing pots and pans. I am a writer by trade. I am under contract to a multi-national nutritional supplement manufacturer and I write all their labels and do lots of articles that get translated into languages I don't even know exist. I also do some freelance writing as well. Its a living and I can do it from home. We live in Chino Hills with our three Old English Sheepdogs and one cat, named Missy. Hubby teaches first grade and has given new meaning to the term "Kindergarten Cop". At 55 he is hysterical and entertains his students by surfing on his chair. We are members of the frequent visitors club at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital ER. He is also a lot of fun to learn from. If a student gets a difficult problem correct, they get to throw Curious George at Godzilla on Monster Island to see if they can topple Godzilla from his throne. They all love him and he's an excellent role model for children who come from a broken home. In his district this is th...Expand for more
e rule, not the exception and its great for him to be a good example to his male students. Some of them, sadly, have never had a positive male presence in their lives. It is often difficult for me to travel, though I love it so. We aren't as handicapped accessible as we'd like to think we are. Even at places like Sea World, there is only one bathroom that will accomodate a power chair. Of course, it would help if all the teeny boppers wouldn't hog up the handicapped stall. I fall over quite easily and getting up is a chore. I'm happy and content in my life. God has been incredibly gracious and good to me. Sure, sometimes I get down about the state of things, but I have my brain, I have a wonderful husband, children who don't talk back (well they bark back, but that's only when they want a cookie) a beautiful home that is fully handicapped accessible and the funds do to what I want. Well, not everything that I want, there is a daily limit on EBAY shopping. There is one great sadness in my life. My very best friend and prom date (you all remember that tall handsome young man I went with) died three years ago at the age of 42. He choked to death on a piece of meat at the Arroyo Chop House. It was quite a shock to me and I still haven't gotten over it. He visited me twice a week and even more when I would be hospitalized, so I really miss his friendship and company. He's in Heaven now and it will be wonderful to see him again. I'd love to get in touch with other class members. You have to realize that for all intents and purposes, I am housebound, so e-mails and phone calls and visits mean a lot to me. Hope you all are doing well and are content in your lives, whatever they may be. Kimberley
