Anthony's Story

Life Summary - After living in Sao Paulo, Brasil (1979-80), Dusseldorf, Western Germany (1980-1981), and numerous stateside locations, I've settled in St Charles Missouri. I've worked for Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation since 1976. Hard to describe what I do, I guess I make machines and computers do things they don't want to do. (Note added Saturday 12/28/2007, 10:30am CST: This is based on the assumption that if you connect a computer to a machine that "they" will have the "will" to do anything at all. There would, however, be no point in connecting a computer to a machine in the first place unless you had some task in mind for the result. Therefore, it's really a given that when a computer is connected to a machine there are specific tasks for it, the "computermachine", to accomplish, whether it wants to do them or not. Entropy, being what it is, ensures the "computermachine" will at times not cooperate.) I married a girl I met at work in 1976 and were engaged in February 1979, two weeks before I left the country for 10 months. We married in December 79 and returned to my overseas home, Sao Paulo. As of today (2009/01/17) we've been married for 29 years. Some time later we moved to Dusseldorf, the Paris of the Rhine, a beautiful city in Northern Western Germany (Ja, Ich spreche deutsche). The German food and lifestyle being what it is (good, good, and just plain good) my wife became pregnant and our daughter was born in Dussledorf in July of 81. We returned to the states later that year when I passed on a job that would have moved us to the southwestern tip of Spain. garrison style home in a racially diverse neighborhood bordering Cleveland Hts and the city of Cleveland. I watched my daughter grow from a baby to a toddler, and I could already see the start of the intelligence, wit, and temper that would make me old before my time when she hit her teen years. As things happen, soon after I returned "home" I was sent to Ivrea, Italy (north of Turin) to study-up on some Olivetti machine control technology my company picked up in a joint venture. I was joined by co-workers from the UK and Germany. This is where I learned that it was the Italians who taught the French how to cook. Real Italian food is the best in the world. On weekends we travelled, visiting Genoa, Pisa, and Firenze (Florence) one weekend, and travelling north through Aosta to Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc) in the Italian Alps on another weekend. Stay tuned. 2007 update - I teach computers to make beer. Feb 2024 update - Funny little stroke in 2019 while on a job at a paper mill in Tulsa, eventually needed to retire before I programmed something that would kill somebody or blow up several city blocks, very glad I got out when I did. Moved to Lake St. Louis, Mo, a few years back. School If I knew then what I know now I would have shaved my head, tatooed NOMAD to my forehead, and joined the Rangers. (NOMAD is a reference to an Alfred Bester short story. Anyone who knows the story and sends me a note with the title will be entitled to a free shot and beer at Z&S the next time I'm in town) -- **Update 2008/02/22: I'll up the ante, send me the name of the book and I'll buy at the Cleveland Chop House next time I'm in town. College At 4300 Euclid Avenue there is a rather large hole in the ground where my college used to be.
