Thomas's Story
Life
I retired in 1999 after working 30 years with the State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs as a project manager. My main responsibility was to create jobs by bringing new industry into the state. During my 30 years, I worked on 50 projects that generated over 10,000 new jobs and created $500,000,000 in new capital expenditure in Illinois. My last project was the 1 million SF Circuit City building in Marion, IL. In 1999, I was asked to serve as the Executive Director of the Regional Economic Development Corporation (REDCO)in Williamson County. In two years, REDCO generated over 850 new jobs and virtually eliminated unemployment in Williamson County. I retired ...Expand for more

College
I attended three universities. The University of Illinois from 1957 to 1959; Southern Illinois University from 1959-1960; and Southern Illinois University again from 1992 to 1994. I was 55 years old when I finally graduated from college.
Workplace
My years with the Southern Illinoisan were exciting. I was the circulation manager in Marion, IL at the age of 16 and had a staff of 21 newspaper delivery boys working for me. We had a circulation of 2000 papers in Marion at the time and was competing with the Marion Daily Republican for advertising and circulation. Later I sold display advertising until I left in 1970 to work for the State of Illinois.
