Brian's Story
Life
Born and raised in Orange County California.
Left that area in 1979 to work in Hollywood as a technician. Laid off in early 1982; moved north to Santa Barbara to study physics. Graduated SBCC in 1985 went to UC Berkeley. Returned to SB area and took a job as a manufacturing engineer for an aerospace optics company. Have been working in Electro/Optics ever since. I am married with five great kids; four girls and a boy. I have a long commute to work by bus.
School
Best teachers: Curt Ghan and Frank Pap.
Hung out in the Media Lab, mostly.
Did photography and film projects.
Didn't do much in science, even though that had been my passion in years prior.

College
Tried to attend several of the nearby city colleges right after High School: Golden West and Orange Coast.
Wanted to learn to play keyboards; I had a burning interest in electronic music. Also wanted to work in film. At OCC I was completely turned off by the requirement to write critical papers for Film Studies.
Was basically unsure of what to do. So I went to work; worked on my own photography projects and got my own place.
Did not return to school until 1982; when I enrolled at Santa Barbara City College.
Workplace
The company I work for is a great place to work, with very progressive policies about work/life. The work is interesting to a geek like me; we build exotic light sources for testing advanced cameras.
