Harry's Story
After high school graduation, I attended St. Louis and Washington Universities and received a bachelor's degree in 1959 after changing my major several times. In 1960 I got married and we had a son in 1961. I received a master's degree in 1963 and from 1964 to 1966 taught at the University of Albuquerque. In 1966 I took a position as assistant professor of history at East Texas State University--now Texas A&M University-Commerce. The following year I received a Ph.D. in modern European history from St. Louis University. After the death of my wife I remarried in 1979 and acquired three step-children. From 1982 to 1987 I was director of the New Center for Learning, a team-taught, multi-disciplinary alternative to general education and from 1994 to 1999 was head of the history department. In 2004 I retired as professor emer...Expand for more
itus of history.
Life has its ups and downs but I have been truly blessed to have a wonderful son, step-children and wife. Our children are scattered from coast to coast--the closest being 500 miles away--which means considerable traveling. We also try each year to take a special trip for ourselves; this year (2010) we took a Castles Along the Rhine Cruise and had a great time. Music is also an important part of my life. Since retiring I started playing the saxophone again after a nearly 50 year hiatus. We attend the Dallas Symphony and Community Concert programs as well as programs at the university, especially the jazz band concerts. Being active members of the International Wine and Food Society, eating with friends once a week and playing dominoes once a month and mahjong once a week fills out our social schedule.
