Sandy's Story
Life
After college years interrupted by four years in the Navy and a failed marriage, I worked for Clemson University for two years before moving to Atlanta and remarrying. I spent about six years doing a little bit of everything before becoming a court reporter. In 1989, my first live child was born, and that changed my life. I suddenly knew what I wanted to be when I grew up...a dad. After another child in 1991, I began working in medical records and transcription. A divorce followed, after which the children and I moved out. They are now (in August 2007) 17 and 16, and the time has gone by too fast. I loved having smaller kids. out teenagers! I have helped coach my daughter in her softball efforts, and she started for 4 years in high school and is trying to land a scholarship. I have stood helplessly by as my son has attempted to jump anything he can pile up in the front yard on his skateboard and have listened to his dreams of becoming a rock star, though my ears tell me this is very improbable. I, like most of you, have winced and squinted but bitten my tongue as I taught them both to drive. I love being a parent, but a hammock under gently swaying palms, a soothing sea breeze, a soft-shell crab sandwich and a cold bottle of beer are mighty strong temptations to run away from home.
