Jimmy's Story

School I attended Farley Elementary school from 1972-1977. I transferred to Mountain Gap middle school in 1977 because I was placed in the Huntsville "SPACE" Program for Talented and Gifted students. I was on the Wrestling team at Mountain Gap. I also was in the Psychology club there. I attended and graduated Grissom from 1981-1984. I played freshman football where we won the city Championship. We were undefeated till our last game which was Huntsville High which coincidentally happened to be the worst team in the City that year. One of our coaches said there was no way we would lose that game so we were given most of the week off. He said all we had to do was just show up and win that one. We were beaten that week. Cant take things for granted for sure. That was a good lesson to learn. I played most of the next year on JV. I didnt like the set up for JV since playing time was limited normally due to the Varsity players who didnt get to dress out took all the JV playing spots so I left the team that year. I had an opportunity come up from an unlikely area. My friend Ken Kephart was in the Band and was always telling me about all those great Band trips he was going on. I told him I wish I could do that but I didn't play an instrument. He suggested that I work with the Band. He spoke to Mr Sparks and he asked me to be the band manager. I took advantage of that opportunity and really enjoyed my experience doing that. I gained an appreciation for music which I still carry with me today. The only thing that I wished I could of done was to play and march just a single game with the band. It was a fine organization. I went to our 10 year reunion and was reunited with old friends there. I was surprised with all the people that knew me. I was the type in school not to stay in any one group but I chose to have friends across many different types of groups. I missed the 20 year reunion. I set up our 25 Reunion in 2009 on Facebook and we had it at the Nature Trail. We are having another one on July 24, 2010 at the same place. College I attended the University of Northern Alabama from 1984-1986 where I was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. I went on a road trip to Jacksonville State University (our arch rival) with our fraternity and decided to transfer to the much larger university there. I helped found a fraternity there and had a great time there. I was in the Army ROTC Corps and was commissioned into the Army while I was there. JSU was a great university to go to. I have alot of fond memories from there. I graduated in 1989 from there with my BS. Workplace I was...Expand for more
commisioned in the the US Army Reserve once I finished college. I went on Active duty immediately following college. I went to War in the first Gulf War and learned alot during that experience. I got out of the Army in 1993 to work for Schneider National Carriers in Green Bay Wisconsin. I worked in operations management during my career with them. I moved with Schneider to Beech Island SC where I worked onsite with the Kimberly Clark Corporation. I moved to Charlotte NC and managed our Southeast Regional fleet and Black and Decker Dedicated operations. I moved to Atlanta, GA to help start a new terminal for Schneider there. I was there about a year when I got an opportunity to be an operations manager for a truckload carrier out of Tulsa Oklahoma (Link America) and helped them start up a new terminal in Atlanta. I worked for them for close to 2 years. Link decided to close their Atlanta office and this gave me the opportunity to come back to Huntsville. I had planned to retire to Huntsville eventually but this opportunity presented itself and I took advantage of it. I currently work at ADTRAN in Huntsville and enjoy working there. It is a very good company to work for. Life is good and We are back in Huntsville. Military I enlisted in the Army in 1987 while in College. I wanted to experience Army Basic Training first hand before being commissioned into the Army. I was trained at Fort Leonard Wood, MO during the summer of 1987. It was a great Experience. I was placed in the 3rd Transportation Brigade Headquarters in Anniston, AL as a SMP cadet while I was in college at Jacksonville State University. I was commissioned and the Reserve was not taking officers at that time. I joined the Alabama National Guard and was placed in the 650th Ordnance Company in Clanton Alabama until I graduated College in May 1989. I went to my officer basic course and applied for the Commandants program to go on Active Duty. I was selected to go on Active Duty by the commandants program and was given the opportunity to choose my duty station. I chose Fort Hood, Texas since it was the largest Army Base in the World. I felt there would be alot of opportunites at that location for my Career. I was assigned to D Company, 27th Main Support Battalion, Division Support Command, 1st Cavalary Division. My Division was deployed to Saudi Arabia in Sept 1990 for Operation Desert Shield/Storm (First Persian Gulf War). I spent time all over Saudi Arabia and Iraq during the war. It was an interesting experience indeed. I have many memories from my military service. I got out of the Army in 1993.
