In addition to working in and around the medical field since 1977, starting as a Nurse’s Aide way back when, I fell in love with the geriatric community and went into Gerontological Nursing. (To think..I had dreamed of working for my OB/GYN) I first became certified in Gerontological Nursing back in 1996. Worked then as a Home Health Nurse, specializing in Diabetic care/teaching and Wound Care. I then found myself answering an ad for a MDS nurse. I didn’t even know what it was. learning field. It takes strength, the ability to take criticism and to take every single teaching moment one can find. It takes teamwork!!! During an annual survey interview I was asked (in a round about way) if I’d like to continue to work the RAI process as well as Pharmacy issues but in a different light. The next thing I knew I was working as a surveyor Later I went on to work for a number of prestigious LTC companies as a consultant (Nursing Pharmacy and The MDS/RAI Process) In addition to receiving my SMQT certification from CMS certifying my knowledge base for being a LTC facility license and certification specialist (surveyor). And actually I’m most proud of my RAC-CT certification. I was first certified 7 years ago as a Nurse Assessment Coordinator but felt the need to improve. Within the year I got my RAC-C and was one of only a handful with the credentials in Louisiana. I later went on for my RAC-CT. Every day is a learning experience and every day I study to improve my knowledge of the RAI process and for further teaching opportunities. When I alluded earlier to “Medicine being in my blood” I meant it. One of my great grandfathers was a physician, a grandfathered to become a physician but had to leave school during the war to help his parents tend their warehouse store, my own father was a small down doctor. I also have three nurses in the family, three more doctors and four pharmaceutical reps. As tough as this field gets at times I KNOW that this is where God intended me to be. I recently experienced the death of my own parents. My mother died of CA a little over a year ago. She constantly reminded meof how proud she was of my nursing and that this was were I belonged. Being with her in those last five months after her Dx was special but I think being with her as a daughter and as a nurse made it that much more special.".
