Margaret's Story
Life
The seminal event of my life occurred when my family moved south at the end of my junior high years. I suppose most kids would have looked at that with a combination of sadness and trepidation, but not me. Sure, I would miss the friends of my childhood, but the thought of making a fresh start captured my imagination. This marked the beginning of my life-long career as a chameleon-dilettante.
I suppose the dilettante seeds of my personality had long been apparent, considering my willingness as a kid to abandon any project in which I was engaged in favor of anything new and temporarily more exciting. Folks who knew me as an undergraduate will also attest to this tendency, as I switched majors five times before landing by default on one that actually granted me a degree. ued, unabated by age or location. Only my husband and cats remain as constants in my life. Along with my love of a good book, a fine photo, a blazing eight-bar blues progression, an intriguing tidbit of family lore, a well-made margarita, and a new adventure, they continue to exercise their siren song on my psyche.
The chameleon in me has come more and more to the fore with each successive move. Like the little fellow who lived beneath the sink and scared my Mom half to death, I change my colors to suit my situation. This constant reinvention has served me well during our journeys around the world and particularly so for this last decade spent in Asia. I delight in the shifting patterns of my life, and have often remarked that my only obvious genetic inheritance from my distant ancestors is a compulsion to migrate.
