Marilyn's Story

After graduating I went off to Valdosta State College and studied Secretarial Science. It was there that I met my husband, Tom, and we married in 1972. We had two sons, Brad (34) and Brian (30). Both boys kept us busy with baseball, soccer, Scouting (both are Eagle Scout), and various school actitities. I worked at Silver Burdett/Ginn textbook publishers for several years. I was a sales correspondent for the southeast region of the country.I loved the work. In 1982, Georgia Pacific moved their Corporate Headquarters to Atlanta. I was there the day they opened the offices for business. I was the Executive Secretary to the Director of Interal Audit. That was a very challenging job but I enjoyed getting up each morning to go to work. I volunterred for years with the Boy Scout in different capacities. I also was on the Board of Directors for the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce. I volunteered with Clayton Clean and Beautiful and was awarded Volunteer of the Year by the Governor for my contributions to CCB. I headed up an annual parade called the "Dump Truck Strut" which was to promote recycling and litter awareness throughout Clayton County. Brad blessed us with two beautiful grandchildren, Keegan (14) and Summer (10). Keegan is our football player. He'll be playing on the Pike County HS football team and wants to play for Georgia. Go Dawgs! I'm hoping one day that he'll be able to take care of Granmama. Summer is very studious and lives in her own little world. Girls are so much different than boys. I always wanted one of each but I am so thankful that I had the two boys. They are so much fun. Brian is still looking for Miss Right. I know she'll come but time is a wasting! Brian has always been happy go lucky and he loves to have fun. He is an outdoors man, and always enjoyed hunting with his Dad. Brian was a tremendous help to me over the years when his Dad was so sick. Don't know what I would have done without him around. In 1992 Tom got the wild hair to build a street rod. He and the boys disassembled a '47 Ford Sedan built it up from there. This kept them busy for years. We travelled all over the southeast to the many car shows and met alot of great people along the way. We always enjoyed both the mountains and the beach and that's where we'd spend our f...Expand for more
amily vacations. My parents have a home in Dillard so we always enjoy going up there to spend time with them and ride through the North Georgia and North Carolina mountains. We enjoyed going to Panama City Beach and Daytona. After 29 years of marriage, Tom passed away in 2001. He was a 100% disabled vet and had multiple medical conditions, several stemming from exposure to Agent Orange. He was a great husband, father, "Poppa", and friend. Five months after Tom died one of our neighbors' wife passed away. We knew Bob over the years. His children are older than mine. They use to be our babysitters. Bob was involved with Tom, Brad and Brian in the Boy Scouts. He is such a terrfic, loving, caring person. I am so glad he came into my life. A year later, out of the clear blue, he called and asked me out to dinner - we have been together ever since, 8 years. We are engaged but have not yet set a date. In the meantime we are having a great time just having fun and travelling. Bob was an aircraft mechanic for Northwest Air lines. In December, 2002 they closed the maintenance base in Atlanta. He asked me if I'd go with him if he bumped into one of the Florida stations. I said, "Yes". He bumped into Tampa and we were there two months before they closed that base. He then bumped into Orlando where we bought a home in St. Cloud and Bob retired he 2005. We have travelled to Mexico; been to Germany, Switzerland, Austria twice; and toured Egypt and Jordan. All were fantastic trips but I was always ready to be back at home. As for the beaches, I now live in Florida and am loving every minute of it. I'm about 40 miles from Cocoa Beach and Melbourne Beach and 25 minutes to Disney World and Sea World. Between my two boys and Bob's four children we stay busy entertaining them and their families when they come to town. We always seem to land at one of the parks. We enjoy going over to the Cape to watch the launches. If we don't ride over we just open our front door and watch it from the house. It's such a awesome sight and something everyone should experience. Life has been good to me. I always enjoy our trips up to Georgia to visit our families and friends. I am really looking forward to our upcoming reunion. Can you believe that 40 years have almost come and gone??
