Keith's Story

After Kellam, I moved to the Washington DC area (Alexandria at the time) and worked in Springfield Mall at World Bazaar for about six months, then took a job with a small company (Inteq) assembling printed circuit boards for six months. In June of 1983 I joined the Navy, signed up for a six year enlistment in advanced electronics as a CTM. I was stationed in San Diego, CA for boot camp and BEE school, Pensacola FL for my "A" school, spent a year in Groton CT at the sub base, a year in Portland ME on the USS Deyo (long since decommissioned) in dry dock chipping and painting for a year, Ft Huachuca AZ for my "C" school - BIC, then my last three years in DC at the Naval Security Station (no longer a Navy base). From there traveled to NSGA sites in Europe and Japan (Rota Spain, San Vito Italy, Naples Italy, Okinawa Japan, Misawa Japan, Key West FL, Wahiwa HI). I have a few friends from my Navy days I still keep in touch with, though the time and distance has taken its toll there. I was discharged (honorably) from the Navy in June 1989, and took a job with Magnavox in Ashburn VA (no longer there) as an Electronics Technician. That lasted about eighteen months, and then I took a job with DynCorp as an Electronics Technician, where I supported a contract for the Department of State, traveling the globe to our embassies and consulates, maintaining their security systems. I traveled to 54 countries, most of them twice, in four years time. I completely burned myself out on work related travel, and avoid jobs that require travel to this day. I have some fantastic stories, memories, and most importantly friends from that time. I transitioned from electronics to computers in the mid 90's when I took a job with Federal Data Corp in Bethesda MD (no longer in existence) . I started on a help desk, and within tw...Expand for more
o years became a Systems Engineer and obtained my MCSE certification in 1998. Say what you will about Microsoft, but without them, I would not be where I am today, so to them I am thankful. Soon after taking that job, they saw that I was a seasoned traveler, so they sent me all over the USA to work on upgrading the VBA computer systems. After six months and 36 states of solid travel, I told them NO MORE! So they put me on contracts with Department of State and Department of Education in DC. I left Fed Data when I could no longer handle the commute, and took a job at the US Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), the oldest law enforcement organization in the US. I maintained their computer systems for a year, and then took a job even closer to home with General Dynamics. I have now been with General Dynamics in Chantilly VA since January 2000, and have worked on a multitude of contracts for them. I have since transitioned my career path from Systems Engineering to Project Management and Systems Integration, with a smattering of managerial positions. In the fall of 2004 I finally came out of the closet to my family, though I was out long before that with many friends. In doing so, life has become more relaxed and peaceful. All of my family is happy for me, and all but 2 friends stood by me. In 2009 I finally started working toward a Bachelors, and finished it in March 2013 Summa Cum Laude. My degree is in Business Administration with a concentration in Acquisitions and Contract Management. It's surprising since I graduated near the bottom of the class in HS. My family is scattered on both coasts, Mom in PSL FL, Dad and Step-Mom in WPB FL, older brother living in TX with his wife, and younger brother and his family are in CA. I currently live in Bristow VA (near Manassas), and am currently single.
