Mary Beth's Story

where to start? I guess at the beginning... here goes... The Treon clan left cold and wet northeastern OH (St Peter&Paul, Warren OH gr K-5), for Phx, AZ Royal Palm (gr 6-8), Xavier HS, and NAU, where I rec'd dual degrees in Spanish and Intern'l Economics... triple minor in bus admin, mrktng, and mngmnt...had some pretty lofty dreams at that time! What do they say, we make plans and God laughs? Went to work for an intern'l hospitality firm out of college... stayed in Flagstaff for about a year after graduation, then transferred with the company to a Scottsdale resort. Didn't make the best of choices for awhile...after being so responsible and grown-up for so many years, I guess Beth finally found her voice! And a little rebellious streak! All's well that ends well as an early marriage resulted in my beautiful daughter Whitney (now 25, Ironwood High School'02, married to David Thistle, both UA alums, living in Tucson, mama to my amazing grandson, David Joseph 03-16-09..the sweetest little baby in the whole wide world!). It was me and Whit against the world for awhile...figuring things out and making our mark! I worked on my masters at Thunderbird School of Intern'l Mgt when Whit was small, but life happened and I never finished. No regrets, tho, as God had other plans for us! Mike (Sterling CO HS'81) and I were married at Heritage Square in Phx in 1990. Our daughter Madison (now 19, IHS'08, SMCC/GCC '09) soon followed, and Zach (15, IHS'13) arrived a few years later. We've been in the same house in Glendale for nearly 17 years...I think it's a place where my kids feel safe and secure...and we've made a happy home there. When the kids were small, I was the mom who loved having all the neighborhood kids over to swim, trampoline, etc...and I still love the BBQs and big family get togethers we have now. As my kids get older and have their own families, I hope it's a place where they can come home and always feel welcome. We're a very active family...we've always had lots on our plate...never a dull moment! All 3 kids were/are very involved in school + club sports. Between softball, swim team, diving, basketball, volleyball, football, roller hockey, and baseball... practices, games, snacks, carpools... I resisted the urge to morph into a mini-van mom. Both girls went to college on volleyball scholarships, and both coach v-ball now (as well as Whit's hubby). Mike and I played co-ed softball in church and city leagues for years...he's coached the kids' baseball, softball, and roller hockey teams, and even coached girls softball at our kids' jr high. We enjoy travel...loved the out-of-town v-ball tourneys with the girls over the years...always tried to stretch them into loooong weekends. We've cruised a couple of times, love catamaraning and snorkeling St Thomas VI, and the blue, blue waters of the Caribbean. We spent a lot of time on wave runners and water skiing on the Colorado River when my dad lived in Parker, AZ. As Mike is from CO, we've spent a good amount of time on the slopes sledding, skiing, and snowboarding. We love amusement parks, the bigger and faster the better! The Supreme Scream at Knott's is one of my top 5 favs! Madison was able to go to Cedar...Expand for more
Point in OH a couple summers ago...brought back so many memories...our family vacation spot when I was a little girl. I love, love, love the beach, and that's one of the places I can truly relax. Whit and David were married on the beach in Rocky Point summer of '08...barefoot in the sand. All my sisters, their families, and my dad were able to attend...it was a memory we'll cherish always. Madison played JO sand v-ball at Hermosa Beach, and now plays semi-pro sand, so I still get my beach fix...even in Phx! I love going to concerts...esp all those oldies... Remember my first concert ever...Steve Miller Band in early'75 with Michelle Silva at the coliseum...just saw him again, at the state fair last year! I've seen several XHS, BCP, NAU alums over the years at concerts...Styx, Boston, Pat Benatar, the Go-Gos, REO Speedwagon, the Eagles (gosh, remember them at ASU in '77? Barbara Byrne? what a night!?!?). Funny how a song can take you back to a place and time, huh? Although we love to play, I also enjoy my career. After working hotels for several years out of college, I was a property mgr for a small office bldg in N central Phx. Went to work for one of my tenants...and learned the construction industry from the bottom up...or should I say, from the inside out...sticks and bricks. I started working for Price Woods/PWI Construction in Jan'91... hard to believe I've just started my 20th year...yowza! I worked on a residential job-site at Desert Mountain in N Scottsdale for nearly 10 years, took a year sabbatical, and came back to the corporate office to help launch the PWI hospitality division. In addition to high-end hotel/resort renovations, I also work high-risk, high-dollar commercial projects, including ground-up manufacturing plants, restaurants and clubs, and retail TIs. I've been able to enjoy a fair amount of travel... worked for several years renovating a property in Seattle, lots of jobs in Vegas and CA. I still learn something new every day...and I'm thankful for the opportunity. Well, what else? I am blessed that all of my sisters are still in the area (Amy, Xavier HS'81; Meg, XHS'83,; Jodi XHS'83; Mikki, Sunnyslope HS'87). These girls are my best friends in the whole, wide world. After wanting a brother so bad that we invented an imaginary bro when we were small, I am thankful for their husbands, who became honorary Treons when they married into the fam! and all that that implies! You do know, we girls were gonna be "the Treon 5" (yea, like the Jackson Five or the Osmonds), and we played our tennis rackets and golf club guitars and sang in to our hairbrushes many, many nights in that house on Royal Palm. Good times, good times. And yes, we did, and still do, put the fun in dysfunctional! So that's my life, in 1200 words or less. I'm so sorry that I've lost touch with so many, but am grateful for the technological advances that can help us re-connect. If you have a minute, please send a note to let me know how you are... Time passes much too quickly... I'm enjoying this new chapter in my life...and I'm sure there's gonna be something new right around the corner! Can't wait to see what it is! Best wishes and blessings to all, Beth
