Diana's Story
Life
Whoever thought life would get easier outside of school was vastly underestimating things. It's interesting that while one spends almost the same amount of time working as one does at school, that free time seems to have shrunk. One would think its because I'm in more activities now, but really, if you know me, that's not usually the case. But I enjoy every one of those activities, be it band, Church music, or playing music for the Society of Creative Anachronism. So in reality, life is band. Not much as changed over the years has it?
As to life outside of music (there's such a thing?!), my writing takes a big chunk of time, and is a nice creative alternative to music. While scientific papers aren't in the works yet, they may well be at some point. I'm currently more involved in the extra-curricular writing known as creative story writing. We'll see if it goes anywhere. But if it doesn't, I can take away a lot of good times, memories, inside jokes and things to read!
Then of course the important part is the fact I'm married to an amazing guy. It's crazy how life can throw you things that you've always just assumed weren't going to happen (like find someone who matches your "list", or meet them in a function you joked about getting a chance to get out more to meet people).
School
Ah the days of school. So many memories. I can still remember playing Catwings or horses on the playground at Sunset, or the many hours I didn't seem to actually be in class ...Expand for more
(either doing conflict managing, working in the library, tutoring, or crossing guard duty).
Then there was Sandstone, the brand new hallways that I got lost in because I missed orientation, hanging out in the library, and watching the Music Man every year in band.
Then came High school, where I pretty much lived in the band room, seeing the ever-going construction and the loss of the pool, the fun of math class in what was the new hall back then, and watching family feud during the lunch hour!
And then in a long leap of states, I went to University of Arizona, yet never got away from the ever-going construction which was always conveniently blocking my path. There were the multiple hours in band of one sort of another, and the wonderful friendships that came from it.
School days, how I do miss them. (Expect perhaps most of the homework...)
Workplace
So what does a music geek who loves math and science do for a living? For someone who doesn't like ambiguity, loves straight facts and numbers, hates probability, and is a profectionist on her own work? I work in weather, a topic that we don't fully understand, that can change unpredictably, and is laden with probability! However, I do find it fascinating to see just what can happen, and how the weather models work and how we use them to make our forecasts. My main interest is climate and anything to do with weather data. I'm the one who writes the Month in Review for the National Weather Service in Pendleton, Oregon.
