Robert's Story

Towards the end of my senior year in high school my Dad decided to take a new job in Northern California. This means that I left GHS in April of my senior year, much to my consternation. We moved to the San Jose area and I started attending De Anza College (best dang community college in the country). I totally loved it there, no more cliques to deal with, no more moronic jocks to deal with and not too many egotistical English teachers to get past. Being somewhat of a dithering individual I eventually transferred to San Jose State and dropped out after two semesters. A couple years later I enrolled at Cal Poly Pomona, and dropped out after 2 quarters. Having worn out my welcome at my best friend¿s parent¿s house, I moved back to San Jose only to be offered a job in Whittier at the Whittier Daily News a year later. While back in the SoCal area I enrolled at Cal State L.A. and this time I didn't wait two terms to drop out, I did it the same semester! After moving back to San Jose I knocked around for a lot of years in various jobs that I was not suited for. I've sold insurance, hardware, sporting goods etc. I've been a security guard, a freelance reporter, a warehouse worker, a pool hall bouncer/cashier and have been employed at numerous small time jobs that I can't even remember at the moment. In the early 90s I enrolled at San Francisco State University, and after a false start or two actually managed to stick with it, while working full time in San Francisco and living in San Jose. I finally graduated with a B.A. in International Relations. Naturally with a degree like that, the first thing I did was to enroll in grad school, and yes, dropped out after two semesters. I meant my now ex-wife at SF State, and lived in San Francisco for 4 years before moving to Sacramento. Having a college degree in something fairly useless, I wormed my way into a computer technical support job and I've been in the I.T. field ever since. While living in Sacrame...Expand for more
nto I convinced my boss' boss that I was the perfect person to fill the vacancy in the U.K. office that had just come up. To my great surprise, and my then wife's, she agreed, so I ended up moving to England for 13 months. I would have lived there longer, it is such a cool place, but the wife's family was having problems and we needed to move back. Unfortunately there were no jobs with the company's offices back in Sacramento so I ended up getting another job, this time in Folsom. While working for the Folsom company there was a need for people in my department to go to France and work with the locals over there so that we could learn first hand the problems the European clients were experiencing. Because of my brief "overseas" experience I was pushed me to the front of the line for the south of France position and ended up living there for 3 months. It was great hanging around Cannes during the summer I have to admit. While in France I was contacted by another company in the SF Bay area who threw a bunch of money and stock options at me so I went to work for them. The company went out of business 6 months later. This was during the dot.com bust so needless to say I was hired and laid off 3 more times in a the next 2 years. I started my own company, writing term papers for lazy college students (yep there are people who do that). It was during this time that my ex-wife had gastric bypass surgery, lost a ton of weight and then lost a whole bunch more by dumping me. I reentered the I.T. world 3 years ago, worked in Rancho Cordova, Ca. for a while then moved to south Orange County for a year. While there I decided that I had enough of California and managed to secure a job in Portland, Oregon. I moved to Vancouver (just across the river from Portland) in August, 2007 and have been learning how to drive in the rain, exploring all kinds of cool places, and generally soaking up the atmosphere ever since. If you guys are ever in the region, look me up.
