Allison's Story

Well....where to begin???? I'll start with my move from Cupertino to Sunnyvale when I was 11 years old. When I first moved to Sunnyvale I lived in Orchard Gardens on Garner Street. I LOVED living in Orchard Gardens. Back then in the early 70's everyone got along. I remember that all the kids between 13 and 18 all hung around together. We played co-ed sports at the park, road bikes with two on a bike to get to our Water Polo games at challenging parks. ****WE ALWAYS WON!!**** We all went to the movies together, hung out at the park and it was nothing to have 20 bikes in someone's driveway. (usually mine because my mom wouldn't let me run the neighborhood after dark) so...I ran with my friends as much as I could during the day and spent the night as often as possible. LOL After moving to Arkansas when I was 14, I left behind my friends and first love who were my family. I remember crying all the way to Fresno after seeing my friends on the sidewalk in front of my house when our car and U-haul pulled away. I was very angry at my mom at that time. When my family moved back 7 months later to Lakewood I was devastated to find that everything and everyone that I loved and cared about had seemed to change. The old familiar was no longer there. I was now in Lakewood instead of Orchard Gardens and needless to say that the boyfriend that I thought was waiting for me had a new love (like a high school boy would wait for his girlfriend to come back...that's young love for ya) and my friends and I had alot of catching up to do. I had my first child at the age of 16. My beautiful daughter Jessica. I dropped out of high school to be a full time mom. On June 30th, 1979 I married George Alvarez whom also lived in Lakewood. We had a son....(my second child) George A Alvarez II in January of 1980. Needless to say that the marriage only lasted for 4 years. I was now a single mother with two kids. I was on my own by March of 1983. In May of 1983, I applied for an apartment in San Jose and the manager's name was Ken Gilbert. Ken Gilbert also had a daughter Aisha who was only a year and a half old when we met. Ken rented me the apartment next door to his and we just seemed to click. We moved in together in July 1983 and by May 1984...we had our son Kenny. When I met Ken...my daughter was 5 years old and my son was 3 years old. His daughter 1-1/2 years old and then came our son. Between us we had mine, his and ours. We were very young but as parents I think we did an excellent job. We have 4 out of 4 high school graduates. We have 7 grandkids with the 8th and 9th (twins) due in February 2010. Ken and I were married for 22 years, divorced for 2 years and now re-united and thinking about getting remarried. WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE!! If any of you ever get a second chance with someone you truly love......grab onto them and don't let go. The one person from my past wh...Expand for more
o I'd most like to see again is Maria Guel, because she was my best friend and really took care of me when I was pregnant with my first child and she is my daughters Godmother. I truly have missed her friendship. What I've learned most from my kids is what unconditional love really is and the forever bond that you have as parent and child. I don't love any of my kids more than the others but have a different type of relationship with each one of them. It's amazing growing up with your kids (I was a very young mother) and the awesome relationships that you have with them when they are adults. Believe me, when you think they are not listening to you as kids, you will realize when they are adults that they were listening after all. LOL If I won $100 million, I'd give 1/4 of it to build a homeless shelter, then spend the rest on homes for my kids , college education for my grandkids and have my husband retire. My current age is 47. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be raising their kids. I was so completely suprised that alot of people my age are grandparents. My best friend would tell you I'm young at heart, fun to be around or talk to on the phone, a friend for life (if I am your friend), a survivor, a driven woman who can succeed and take care of herself and her family. People who don't know me or don't know me very well would probably describe me as shy at first (not so shy that I won't talk), but, they will know that I am intellegent. I share my home with ex husband, which I find wonderful now that the kids are grown and gone. In 10 years, I hope to be living somewhere other than California. I'm going to get there by Car and U-haul. My oldest friend is Jeannette Logue. (Who passed away July 12th, 2009) We met at the Christmas parade in 1975 in Town & Country Village in Sunnyvale. We were both on the Drill Team. However, I was Madrone and she was Benner. After the parade everyone went to Round Table Pizza and both schools were talking that rivalry trash and we looked at each other and went outside. Within a few months, Jeannette was going to Madrone and we told everyone we were cousins. We were 12 years old and to this day and forever, she always has been and always will be my best friend!!!:) I love her and will love her as my sister until the end of time. :)))) The childhood memory that I will never forget would be moving to Arkansas when I was 14 and seeing my boyfriend and friends on the sidewalk in front of my house waving when our car pulled away. I will never forget that day! :( I would say that the biggest surprise in my life would be that I am 46 years old, married for 22 years (still with my ex now) and that we have 3 grown kids of my own ages, 31, 29, 25 and a stepdaughter age 27 that I also helped raise and that I have 7 grandkids with the 8th and 9th (twins) due in February 2010. I have grown up with my kids and we are a very close family.
