Robin's Story

Ode to "Romo" When I was a young lass, a teacher came into my life in the seventh grade. Did he but know it, he inspired me during a terrible time in my young life. He was really a young man, though the loss of his hair to my young eyes meant he was old. His name was Norman A. Rominski, a new first year teacher and it wasn't long before he was called, "Romo" by several kids (Ed Cain, Tom Kaldor? who was it ?) and the name stuck. He was teaching us Greek and Roman Mythology and laying it on thick. For some reason I remember Jim Thompson was in the class him asking me if I'd heard Jim Croce' had died and I was stunned. Here I had been worrying about whether my Dad was going to really going to live or not after a terrible car wreck and I had no idea that Jim Croce's plane had gone down or how it was that what Romo was teaching I remembered it word for word. Romo was going to give a test and we all knew it was gonna be a killer. Yep, it was, 100, Yep, 100 questions being asked by Romo which you were required to write a one word answer on your sheet of note paper with each line numbered. It was a majo...Expand for more
r part of your grade. I think everyone's pencil was sweaty including mine. But it amazed me, despite the crushing worries, every question Romo asked I didn't have to think about too much , I just wrote down the answer before he asked the next question. I was never so glad to turn that test in. A few days went by, and Romo announced in class that only one student had gotten a 100 on his 100 question nail-biting Greek and Roman mythology verbal test, written answers. It was me. I remember being stunned again that I had done such a thing and from the looks on everyone's faces when he said my name, like that commercial was well-priceless. Romo always believed in his students, but I think most especially his first class of 1978, he moved every year with us and was our constant guide until we graduated. I heard with great sadness of his passing in Italy, but I shall always remember him thru the eyes of my 12 year old self with great love and affection for the lessons taught and the lessons learned, the laughter shared. Rest then in Peace Dear Teacher for you were a giant among them and your time with us too short.
