Douglas's Story

Workplace Also see military profile. Presently, I am a double dipper - retired military and DoD civilian employee. I returned from Germany in 2010 after almost 20 years as a middle level manager responsible for overseeing stationing of Army units in Europe, fielding new equipment to Army units in Europe, and documenting personnel and equipment requirements and authorizations for all Army units in Europe. I am one of 4 managers in my division and I have 8 people who work for me. Traveling was a part of my job and it included trips to Italy, Holland, France and Belgium, as well as several of the eastern European countries - Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbo-Montenegro, etc. Military Graduated from West Point (United States Military Academy) in 1966. Attended Airborne and Ranger training immediately after graduation. First assignment with a Nike Hercules Missile Battery in Kingston, WA (18 months) followed by a 12 month tour in Vietnam. In Vietnam, my primary duty was a military advisor on ...Expand for more
refugee resettlement and construction of temporary camps. Returned to Kingston for another 12 months tour afterwhich I went to Fort Bliss, Texas for a year and then on to Indiana Universtiy to study for my Master's Degree. After West Point, I went to the Marine Corps Command and Staff College at Quantico, VA (1 year). After that, I spent 3 years in Wuerzburg, Germany with the 3d Infantry Division (litte place called Giebelstadt Air Field). After that, it was 5 year tour in Washington DC followed by a 5 year tour at Fort Monroe in Hampton, VA. A chance to return to Germany occurred in 1989 and I took it. Ended up as the Director for the Drug and Alcohol Prevention Control Program. After 4 years, I retired and stayed in Heidelberg, Germany to work for HQ, US Army, Europe for the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations.
