Carolyn's Story

My fondest memories of MSHS are mostly band related ...yep, one proud band geek here. And my all time favorite instructor was Mrs. West (loved math - still do). I even enjoyed Miss Gatch, who would doubtless blanch at my penchant for the run-on sentence. After Mainland, I attended DBJC for two years then moved to Pensacola to finish up my BA at UWF. I returned to Daytona after graduating UWF -- taught math at Campbell for a couple of years, then I spent one year teaching math in Trenton, just outside of Gainesville FL. That was enough of teaching in public schools for me. I moved to Atlanta in 1977, and changed my career path to insurance - specifically, commercial lines underwriting. I moved to Hawaii in 1989, where I still live - I love it. Earning my MBA at HI Pacific Univ in 1993, I taught as adjunct faculty there, teaching Management Strategy and Business Policy part time (much more rewarding than trying to explain fractions to adolescents, that’s for sure). Travel for my day job increased and I had to quit teaching. That day job for about 23 years was State Relations Executive for the National Council on Compensation Insurance...Expand for more
, Inc. (NCCI), managing government and affiliate affairs in AK, HI and WA. NCCI is based in south Florida, which afforded me many opportunities to stop by Daytona and see the family on the way to/from Boca Raton for corporate meetings. I recently (2018) retired, and I’m enjoying not working for the first time in my adult life. I enjoyed a great career, but it’s time for other adventures! I'm happily married with 2 wonderful step kids (a son in California, and a daughter in Scotland) and 5 terrific grandkids (3 in CA, 2 in Scotland). Summer of '17 we took them all on a family cruise around four of the Hawaiian islands followed by a week on the beach. As beautiful as Hawaii is, Bud and I really love to travel - especially to places we've never seen before. That's when I enjoy photography the most - capturing those wonderful moments. In our 23 years together, we've been to 48 countries and all 7 continents...so far! I'm a cancer survivor, and I've learned that each day is a precious gift -- so that's how I treat life: a giant present with new surprises every day. As for my years at MSHS...if I had only known then what I know now!
