Jean's Story

Life While living in Hobbs, I attended First Baptist Church,& sang in the choir. Later on, I started going to Rock Chapel Baptist Church. I was a Brownie, a Girl Scout, & I belonged to the Rainbow organization. I loved tap & ballet, & occasionally taught the class the tap lesson for the week. I sang with the church at the radio station,& sang weekly on stage at Air Base City. My next door neighbor, Sandra Taylor was my friend that got me into the singing at Air Base City. I adored her! She played an accordion, & I just had to learn to play, but not quite as good as she could play. She had a pony tail .. I had to have a pony tail. Ha/ha My first husband was in the Marines, stationed at Camp Pendleton, Ca., and that is how I ended up in California. I am re-married, been married 28 years and have three grown children, two boys, one girl. I have eight grandchildren, plus five from my husbands side. I did get my GED, & some college credits & certificates, after my first marriage ended. I briefly worked for the Hobbs Police Dept., but returned to California. I worked for a company for about 20 yrs. making small magnetic parts. I worked in the chemical part of the company. That job ended because the company shut down. I then went to work for the Orange County Treasurer/Tax Collector ... yep, I was what people referred to as "Your That Person". Ha/Ha I retired from the Treasure Tax Collector's Office in Santa Ana, Ca. My oldest son works for a sheet metal co. in Missouri & my 2nd son retired from USMC after about 21 + years & now teaches on base what he did while in the service(MP). My daughter was also in the Marines, then went into the Army Reserve & served time in Iraq. From the stories she tells, she is lucky to be here & alive. I get into quite a few slot tournaments, and yes ... I have won. That is probably why I keep getting into them. I did win a 2008 Ford Escape SUV Hybrid. The casino paid taxes & fees. I had to claim it at the end of the year, but out the door...Expand for more
... FREE. I love to take photos, & for special times/events put the pictures on a DVD with music for my family & friends. My Mother passed away July 14, 2007. She was 87 years old. I still catch myself going to the telephone to call her .. hard to believe she is gone. I will still go back to Hobbs & Odessa to visit my two sisters. Hobbs has changed, with the casino & the race track. Unbelievable how the housing cost has gone up in Hobbs! Hardly any shopping there, except for Wal Mart, Home Depot, Staples, type of stores. Anyway, I'm doing good, no major problems. I have tried to keep in touch with a few of my classmates. I have known Rebecca (Becky) McCracken since we were in the 2nd grade, & we still keep in touch. Update on Rebecca .. She passed away April 10, 2011. I have another close friend, Georgia Spears, that I have know since about the 6th grade, that I keep in touch with. She has actually come to Ca. to visit me ... that was a great time, talking about the olden days. She now works for an airline as a flight attendant. A few of my other close friends are no longer here on this earth, but I still think about them often! Rose Glasspoole, Dorothy Copeland, Don Edwards, & Bill Neergard. I'm still trying to find Margaret Shannon Or Betty Rice ... with no luck. I hope someone may read this & know something about Margaret or Betty. Betty is Margaret's cousin. I know that Betty's Uncle worked for Hobbs High School in 1960-61, as a custodian, but I cannot remember his name. If I can think of anything else, I'll update. I wasn't able to attend the 2009 class reunion but I hope to be at the next one .. If all of my body parts hold out. Ha/ha Bye for now, your friend, Jeannie Feb. 28, 2010 I won a 65 in. LCD flat screen t.v. The casino had a drawing & my name was drawn. A total of 6 people won 50 in., 55 in., & 65 in. That was a treat & surprise. We were sitting outside waiting for the drawing to be over & debated leaving early when I heard my name.
