Timothy's Story

Workplace Work Biography: Attended college in the mid-west (Elmhurst, IL) after managing to turn a three year high school into a four year marathon. Joined the Navy for four years (communications) including one in Vietnam (not much fun-they shoot at you over there-but certainly a life defining experience). Found employment thereafter in the transportation industry (trucking) as a Safety & Personnel director, finally moving from New Jersey to Baltimore, MD. Met and married my wife in 1974, and accepted a position with the Maryland Division of Corrections. Became OIC, Criminal Investigation Division in '76, and went back to grad school (Criminal Justice (78). Great job, lots of stress, no money. Moved family back to Jersey in '78 to work as Corporate traffic manager for a chemical company (lots of chemical companies in Jersey!). Decided to turn my hobby (restoring old homes) into a business in 1990 (Great Restorations, Inc.). Good career decision (or perhaps just blind luck). Was able to retire in September of 2002. Since, have become fairly accomplished at washing dishes, floors, windows, baseboards, etc (old home, circa 1886, 17 rooms). Try never to let such activities interfere with bowling (competitive), golf (non-competitive), fishing or traveling. Military Short Bio: 1968 - Basic Training, Great Lakes IL (was able to sing with the Navy Blue Jacket Choir for this period-great duty); ...Expand for more
Electricity & Electronics School, Great Lakes, IL (Blue Jacket Choir, again); Radioman "A" School, Bainbridge, MD (everything you ever wanted to know about Morse code and teletype machines); 1969 - Counterinsurgence Schooling, Little Creek, VA (everything you already knew about why you DID NOT join the Marines!!!). August '69 - All expenses paid round trip to the Republic of Vietnam, Danang, Cau Viet, Dong Ha, Tan My Phu Bai, Hue, Cam Ranh Bay, Saigon & Nha Bay. Beautiful country, interesting food, exotic women, very, very dangerous for Americans in 69-70. It was my impression that that no one wanted us there; not the South Vietnamese, Viet Cong, North Vietnamese, not even the US military. Saigon had a chapter of the Navy Blue Jacket Choir; auditioned and spent final five months singing "in-country". Fortunately, nobody shot at me for singing. Back to the world in August 1970, assigned to carrier USS Wasp, homeported in Quonset Point, RI. Great duty for a single guy! North Atlantic and Mediterranean cruises for two years; Canada, Spain, England, Ireland, Denmark, Africa and Bermuda 6 times (Admiral liked to play tennis). Wasp (circa WWII) was scrapped in March of '72. Reassigned to NAS Quonset, RI communications station. Would have loved to stay in the Navy, but re-enlistment was an automatic ticket back to Vietnam in May of 72. Accepted early separation on May 15, 1972. Civilian again.
