Marqueta's Story
After graduation, I spent one year at North Texas State University. In 1967, I went home and went to work at Dow (surprise!!). There I met Carl Russell. It was a blind date set up by the secretary in his office. Her husband worked in my unit at Dow so she was always trying to set up the single people she knew. We were married March 1968.
In December 1969, Carl took a job with Ethyl Corp in Baton Rouge, La. There we raised our two children, David and Melissa, while I finished school at LSU earning a degree in Elem Education Dec 1978. In LA that meant I could teach 1-8 grades. in 1979, I went to work teaching 7th grade Math in the East Baton Rouge Parish system.
After 3 1/2 years, in 1982, I tired of teaching and opened my own needlework shop. Just as it was taking off and becoming profitable, Carl was transferred to the Richmond, VA office in 1986. David had graduated Baton Rouge High and Melissa had completed her Freshman year.
For a few years, I stayed home and took care of getting us all settled in Virginia. By the time Melissa graduated High School in 1989, I found a part time job and went back to work. Standing on my feet all day didn't suit me so I looked for office work in 1991 and landed a position with Signet Investment Services as an Admin Asst.
I gradually worked my way up to the Compliance area dealing with broker and firm registrations and regulations. I completed my Series 7 license and in 1995 moved to Branch, Cabell & Co. as a Compliance Assistant. Since it was a small company, I was delegated branch exams as well as broker and firm registrations. I also compl...Expand for more
eted my Series 8, NYSE Managers Exam. In 2000, I moved to First Union Securities, which had bought up Signet among other banks, and became a Registration Supervisor with a staff of 5 people reporting to me. By 2005, when I took Family Leave because of Carl's illness, I was supervising a staff of about 20. The company had continued to acquire other broker/dealers as well as merge with Wachovia Corporation.
After Carl's cancer was diagnosed in 2005, I took leave to stay home and care for him. As it turned out, I would have to terminate my employment with Wachovia. Carl passed away May 5, 2006. Now I stay home and play bridge, run errands for my daughter, see my granddaughters, Jessica 22 and Christa 15.
My son, David, is a composer living in Los Angeles trying to make it in the movie industry. He has worked on many projects and has many credits to his name. If you see the name David Russell or David G. Russell, that is his work. One project with the Farrah Story aired on NBC in May. He last worked on "Star Wars: Clone Wars" for Skywalker Ranch and air on Cartoon Network.
My daughter, Melissa Wood, lives here in Midlothian, Va and is an Admin Tech with the VA ABC Board. She is enjoying the work and her family. Jessica is taking college courses on line and Christa enters High School this fall (2013).
I now have two dogs and a cat (who is out and about right now). Bella is a beagle and Lilly is a mixed breed. Both are loves and keep me company. Lilly is a little rascal stealing my food and making a general mess around the house. She really keeps me hopping to stay up with her.
