Jennifer's Story

Life After graduating from Brescia with a degree in Elementary Education K-8, I moved to the DC area filled with idealistic dreams of teaching my own classroom. Unfortunately, teaching my first classroom (5th grade at a Catholic grade school in Alexandria, VA) was one of the roughest years of my life. I found myself facing the hard fact that, while I'm an excellent teacher, I have absolutely no patience for school politics or any of the other garbage that goes with it. So, I said a sad good-bye to classroom teaching. I'm now working under contract for the Federal Transit Administration helping public transportation companies fill out their paperwork to receive federal funding. (By the way, Owensboro reports to us.) Yes, I know it sounds boring, but I'm having a blast! Because of my natural (and often obsessive) attention to detail, the requirements of this job suite me perfectly. I've even been promoted several times. As an Analyst, I had my own caseload of about 90 agencies to nit-pick. Now, as Quality Control Supervisor, I lead the validation team and review ALL the reports that go through us. The best part is that I use my teaching skills every day through assisting the transit agencies and training new analysts. On the personal side, I'm not married or even dating currently. For now, I'm just enjoying being single and all the advantages that come with it. I have a wonderful circle of friends who keep me sane and help me remember to have fun every once in a while. I'm even rooming with my best friend from high school! Tammy Beaven (class of 1990) joined me here in Virginia about 5 years ago and we've been sharing an apartment for 3 or 4 years. We drive each other nuts sometimes, but I've really enjoyed having her around. My home also consists of one dog - he's Tammy's. A beagle/border collie mix, he's smart as a whip and thinks he's human. I have to swallow my pride and admit that I've grown to love him despite the whole "dog" thin...Expand for more
g. Never thought I'd have one in my house...dog hair and all that. But I've gotten used to it. I attend St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Fairfax. I've moved several times since moving to this area, but have always stayed with St. Leo's. It's become home to me. Every month, the church sponsors a 2-hour praise and worship time, which has become my favorite monthly activity. It's a real opportunity to recharge that old fire. I also volunteer for the pro-life group led by Tammy. My hobbies mostly involve quiet and alone time...reading, decoupage, cross-stitching, etc. Though I've learned to function in the real world where there are many, many, many people, I still find the need to be completely by myself sometimes, and crafting helps. I think my friends might be tired of receiving decoupaged boxes, plaques, ornaments, etc, as gifts every Christmas, though. Perhaps it's time to learn a new craft...maybe candle-making? Hmmm... My latest obsession is typewatching: uncovering peoples' temperaments based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicators. I think I've pegged about half my co-workers and a few of my family members. It helps me understand them better. Incidentally, I'm an ISTJ (Introverted Sensing Thinking Judger). Female ISTJs are rare. I'm unique. Really! Look it up. Be aware, though, that it's addictive. I warned you. I'm happiest when at the ocean. Any body of water will do in a pinch, but there's just something about the ocean that brings me closer to God and makes me forget all my troubles. There are many good beaches within 3-4 hours of here, and my friends and I try to make a weekend several times a year. My favorite beach is Bethany, DE. But, like I said, any will do. I make the 11-hour drive back to O'boro at least once a year. The trip is most enjoyable in autumn when the trees are turning. My family is still in the area, with the addition of 1 beautiful niece and 3 adorable nephews. That's me in a nutshell. Life is good.
