Workplace
I spent 4 years in the Navy after graduation from VMI. I went to Nuclear Power School and served as the Electrical Division Officer on the USS Nimitz. Remember US-2 Lybia-0? I was there.
I then spen 12 years at the shipyard as an engineer, still working on aircraft carrier nuclear plants. I liked it so much, I went and got a Master's degree in engineering. I also learned a bit about computers.
When the shipyard...Expand for more
became boring, I used my computer skills to get a nice job with Crestar Bank (in Richmond) as a computer system auditor. I learned a lot about banking, motgages, and computer security. When Suntrust merged with my bank, I could have stayed with them and moved to Atlanta. I decided to stay in Richmond so my daughter could finish school with her friends.
That lead me to my next job as the audit manager at the state social services office. After 5 years of state stagnation, I tried auditing at a retail chain. I was too late - Circuit City was on its way out. So I bailed and went vack to the state for a year, working as the IT Auditor for VITA. When Northrop Grumman took over the IT functions for the state, I was looking for another job. And I found a great one back where I started, at the shipyard.
Never burn bridges.
So, from electrical engineer to nuclear engineer to bank audit to socal services, I've had a varied career path.
I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up.
