Pam Huckaby's Story
So much, and yet so little about my life has changed since I graduated from Weston in 1978. I have remained true to my values, and beliefs. Yet I have professionally achieved much. In 1993 I entered the nursing program at Northwestern State University and I went on to become a RN. I graduated with honors (Who would have ever thought it!). I started working in Hospice care in 1997. In 2003 I started my own Hospice here in Natchitoches - "Hope Hospice". I have been working as a Hospice nurse since 1997. I provide "end of life" care to patients diagnosed with 6 months or less to live. I love the work that I do. I remain married to Wayne, who I married in my senior year at the age of 17 in 1977. Our 31st anniversary is coming up.
Much to everyones surprise, we did not start a family right away. We were married 5 years before our first child arrived, our daughter, Jennifer, was born in 1982. Eighteen months later our full term son, John Machen North, was stillborn. Our daughter got married in 2005 and is currently in Nursing School at Northwestern. s her goal to become a Hospice nurse. It is my goal to someday retire and let her run Hope Hospice :)
My dad, Red Huckaby passed away on May 15, 2007 after a long battle with Congestive Heart Failure and Lung Cancer. The end of his life was spent under the care of Hope Hospice, with him demanding that I be his nurse :) I loved him dearly, and miss him terribly. He had become my best friend as the years slipped away. In honor of him. I created the "Red Huckaby Memorial Scholarship". The Scholarship is only open to Weston students that want to attend Northwestern State University here in Natchitoches. My dad was the last of 14 children, with his mom passing away when he was 14 months old. Due to this, he had very little opportunities to get a education. But he was determined that his children and grand-children get a education. All of his children and grand-children went to Weston, except for my daughter, Jennifer, who grew up in Natchitoches. The first annual Red Huckaby Memorial Scholarship was awarded on graduation night, May 6, 2008. Ironically, my nephew, Cody Huckaby, won the $1000.00 Scholarship to Northwestern.
