Linda Kay's Story

Life I moved to BC from Red Lake in 1966 when my Dad was hired at Giant Mascot mines in Hope BC. I was married once but have since divorced, have one son and 3 stepchildren, who have given me 7 beautiful grandchildren. Currently single hoping to met that special someone.... I enjoy life...and make the most of what I have. I design coats, jackets, vests, regalia and formal wear with Cree, Ojibway and West Coast symbols and designs. Although designing clothing is only a hobby. I have been fortunate to have been invited to do fashion shows in BC, Alta, Ont, and Montana. In 2003 I was selected along with 10 other Aboriginal designers from across Canada to show my fashions at the National Aborginal Music Awards held in Toronto. Quite an exciting time for me..I have also started facilitiating self esteem workshops for youth utilizing my fashions, called "Strutting Your Stuff in Style". I try to learn all I can about my culture..as its my responsiblitiy as a grandparent to pass what I know onto my grandchildren..so I sing, hand drum and dance. Jingle dress dancing for me began on May 17th, 2002, the 1st year anniversary of my Dad's passing. Vey tramatic time for me..He was my inspiration and gave me the determination, I have today.. every time I dance its for him. His name Harry Kay.....Expand for more
well known miner in the Red Lake area. Participating in my culture..makes my spirit sing. I feel proud of who I am, I beleive its important to know who you are. For too many years we were expected to be someone else. There was a time in my life where I was ashamed to be a Native person. Growing up in Red Lake was harsh at sometimes...the discrimination was more open then, lots of put downs for being a Native person. My first year of high school...I was put into the class...I think its called Occupational...something....A place where many native kids were put because it was felt they could not learn anymore. Well I would like to be able to see that teacher who thought I would amount to nothing....today. Being a Regional Coordinator, overseeing a provincial intiative is a pretty hugh nothing...Things in RL have changed somewhat...many people are more accepting.....I really enjoyed my time in Red Lake in 2001 - 2003...I l love my community regardless on what I endured in my childhhood...and try to go back as often as I can... I have a accomplished alot in my life....and there are many First Nations people out there..who also need to be recognized for their accomplishments..we are not just welfare cases...Be proud of who you are and stand tall...never let anyone put you down....
