Evelyn Richardson:

CLASS OF 1963
Newellton, LA

Evelyn's Story

Since graduation from Newellton High School in 1963 I moved to Mena, Arkansas where I worked in a nursing home for a few months. Then I moved to Monroe, La. and roomed with Betty Vines until she married. I worked at a Five and Dime store during the Christmas holidays. Then I got a job in an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor's office in Monroe working as a receptionist and filing health insurance claims. Note: this was way before Managed Health Care. The insurance companies had their own individual claim form (not standardized claim forms) Everything was filed manually. Then the doctor hired me to collect delinquent accounts for a percentage of collections. I needed money, so you can imagine I worked hard to collect. I left home without a penny in my pocket when i graduated from high school. So, if I wanted necessities and material things I earned them by working. Imagine that, no government assistance and I survived, bought a new Chevy II at Coit Chevrolet in Newellton. No, it did not have air conditioning. I could not afford that luxury. I soon met my husband of almost 46 years, Larry Richardson. His dad had given him a new Bronze Lemanz Pontiac and it had air conditioning. He believes I loved the air conditioning more than him. LOL I then got a job working for an industrial oil supply firm in Monroe, Mid-South Supply, where I worked until we moved to Shreveport. I worked for 30 years as an office manager for an Retina Specialist here in Shrevepo...Expand for more
rt and retired in April, 2008. We lost our only child, a son, Larry Richardson, Jr. on May 28, 2009 due to a gall bladder problem that could not be operated on because of complications of his liver and kidneys shutting down. This took a toll on our lives, but I truly believe God says to those who cannot help themselves to come on home. He can take care of them. My husband and I love to travel. We have been to Hershey, Pennsylvania, Gettysburg, Masanuttin, Orlando, San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Alaska and are planning to go to Hawaii in April. 2011. God has been good to me, although as I'm writing this story I'm sitting in a Willis-Knighton Hospital bed in Shreveport with pneumonia. God is still good and heals all our physical, spiritual and emotional ills. Keep the faith. August 2, 2012. I will update my post now. God continues to bless me and my family with a strong faith. The doctors told me I would die 1 1/2 years ago if I did not have lung surgery. Today I am still alive, well for the most part and enjoyng life. I hurt for those who have pain, loneliness, and depression. I hurt for a world that does not make sense. The doctors said five years is as long as one will usually live with the type of lung cancer I have. I'm grateful to be here today and still praising Him for life. I pray that all my friends from NHS are doing well and feeling healthy. If you are ever in Shreveport, come to see me. Aloha. Yes, Hawaii was fun last summer.
