Clayton's Story

Life I was born in Belleville in 1936 and my family moved to Regents Park in 1941 and we lived in a tiny bungalow on Bertha Avenue. In those days it was wide open fields and a forest to our rear which was well forested and a wonderful place for children to play. There was a stream which in those days had lots of marine life, fish, crayfish, frogs etc. The place was abundant with wild strawberries, raspberries and blackberries in the summer. My neighbours on Bertha were the Holtom family, the Rowe family, and around the corner was the Archer family, Don Archer and family and Mr. and Mrs. Archer the parents of the Archer children. I recall there were 4 families eventually when Leonard Archer began construction on his home. Early on in the '40's the Bateman Family had a dairy on Pharmacy Avenue about half way down the Pharmacy Avenue hill on the west side. We had two schools in 1947: the ratepayers hall for grades 1 to 5 or thereabouts and the regular school which was a red two-roomed school house on Bexhill Avenue. Eventually a new schoolhouse was built on Pharmacy Avenue in...Expand for more
about 1947. During it's construction my Grade V class was transferred to Oakridge School for one year. As the war ended lots of Veterans returned from overseas and started to build in the community. The mode of operation was to build the foundation and the basement for the family to live in and on weekends work was done to finish the dwelling bit by bit. Most people were of modest earnings in those days and life was not always easy but I have many fond memories of my childhood in Regent's Park and still communicate with a few of my childhood peers. Update on October 31, 2017. - I still live in So. Ca. and am very active (and lucky to be in good health) I golf regularly and still work in the Catastrophe side of the insurance business, i.e. I work when natural disasters occur. I was recently in Toronto in September and visited the old neighborhoods in suburban Toronto which are really unrecognizable but ran into one a very nice lady whose husband was a W2 vet. we had an enjoyable time recalling many friends and acquaintances who have moved on to their next life adventure. .
