Stephen's Story
Life
And I thought public speaking was a person's worse fear. Heck, where to start. I might have an abstract mind with concrete thoughts but there is no doubt, I love to make a person smile and feel good about themself. I like to explore life and social interaction. I will never take life for granted just because I know how precious each second can be. I am confident, silly, compassionate, empathetic, considerate, witty and charasmatic. My friends would describe me as the "nice" guy with a good sense of humor, loyal, reliable and a team player. I am good listener and a loyal confidant to many. I have a fun-loving approach to life and will always believe the glass is half full! I should now, I drank the other half! Though I am 37, almost everyone agrees, even my beautiful nieces, that I am a Toys-R-Us kid! I mean, young at heart. How many people do you know who will walk around work dressed liked a leprechaun on St. Patrick's Day?
Adventurous, athletic, aggressive, competitive or just a glutton for punishment. I can't tell you how many times I have had a knee surgery (6), broken bones (1) or torn ligaments (3). I've even been stabbed by a tree and lived to tell about it. I did have a good streak of three years with no injuries, but I am back on a roll again. Despite the trials, I cotinue to live life with a sense of optimism. Things happen! I keep active with softball, volleyball, swimming, walks and hikes (when I'm not hurt, of course). I take a licking but keep on ticking.
I am a counselor at Cal Poly Pomona. I love my work, especially with young children. Besides speaking to students & their parents, I provide motivational speeches encouraging young kids to strive for their dreams.
What don't I do? I enjoy a street scene with food, music & people; hikes with surprises (waterfalls); softball with friends. I'm a free spirit. I'm even taking social dance class! I'll try anything once! Sky diving? Whitewater rafting? Yep.
Road trip! I like to explore & discover. Whether it's the U.S. or Cali, I like the aesthetics of nature, historical sites and national parks. Yosemite, Niagra & Boston are a few of my favs. I'm definitely have a cornucopia of likes.
I read the newspaper everyday and whatever magazines are lying around. I like self-help, relationship and psychology books (I'm a counselor). Books that touch the soul and spirit ...Expand for more

Workplace
will share this much, my life has been blessed with many career opportunities. Each job brought some sense of fullfillment whether it be experience, friendship, fun, knowledge or skill. From my first job as a Progress Bulletin newspaper delivery boy in Pomona to my current job as a counselor within the Visitor Center at Cal Poly Pomona, each has provided some sense of joy with rewards.
In 2001, I decided to change my career focus. In my heart, I knew intercollegiate athletics and journalism were not in my future plans professionally because of the time it consumed in my personal life. Working nights, holidays, weekends, extensive travel with only summers off. Being that I wanted to establish a long-term relationship with the hopes of starting a family, I knew change was necessary. Thus, I went to work as an Administrative Assistant in the Vice President for Student Affairs. Eventhough I took a 50% pay cut, it gave me an opportunity to evaluate my options. Thankfully, in exploring my options, I was able to realize my natural gifts and skills - great listener, compassionate, problem solver, positive attitude and a zest for life.
As a result, a position at the university became available that interested me - counselor within the Visitor Center at Cal Poly Pomona. There I would work with prospective students, K-college, interested in attending college. I would get to work with children, teens, adults, seniors, groups, special guests. It was an opportunity to be positive, informative, joyful, playful and be a mentor and guidance counselor to many diverse individuals. Lucky for me, I discovered there were more benefits, like my boss Jennifer. She is awesome! A good leader with great organization, ideas and energy. I also would get the chance to work with the best student assistants on campus. Student assistants with intelligence, great personalities, compassion, optimism, energy, leadership skills and, most of all, energy for life!
I have an awesome group that has made this job a "home" and "playhouse". Everyone should have the chance to work in such a lively, interactive, rewarding, gratifying job such as this one. I even get to do motivational speeches, one on one counseling and provide leadership and mentoring skills to the staff and my peers on campus. It's all good in this hood.
