Patrick's Story

Life I was in the Navy from March, 1991 until September, 2006. I started out at Recruit Training Center in Orlando, FL. Then I went to the Fleet on board the USS LaSalle, where I was stationed for 13 months, mostly homeported in Bahrain, but we made some port calls including Muskat, Oman, Karachi, Pakistan, Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. some of these places I had never even heard of before. After my tour on the ship I went to Construction Electrician "A" School in Gulfport, MS. Then I got married to my first wife. From there I went to Iceland for 18 months. Iceland is a beautiful place. I saw the Northern Lights - SPECTACULAR!!!! Next, I was stationed in Groton, CT. This was a great place also. I was close enough to visit home in New York pretty often, but far enough away that everyone was not in my business. During my time in Groton I was sent to Guantanamo Bay Cuba in the wake of the Haitian uprising. I spent 6 months there. That is where I first learned to SCUBA dive. Again - SPECTACULAR!!! Unfortunately, after that, I got stationed in Gulfport, MS. That is NOT a nice place. There is so much hatred there. They definitely don't like Yankees there. But the good thing is that my two beautiful children were born during my time there. My daughter, Grace was born in February, 1999 and my son, Liam was born in June, 2001. While stationed in Gulfport, I deployed to Cuba again with a redeployment to Honduras for relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. I deployed to Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico and to Okinawa. I le...Expand for more
arned very little (skoshi) Japanese during my 6 months there. In the midst of all this, I was divorced from my first wife after 10 years of marriage. After a year and a half, I remarried Melinda from Hattiesburg, MS. (Originally from Tylertown, MS). For 2 1/2 years I made the commute of 77 miles each way to the base in Gulfport. That is the thing I don't miss about being in the Navy. There are a lot of things that I do miss. There was a lot of comraderie and I was able to meet people from all over the country. I made some lasting friendships while in the Navy. I have to say, though, that there is no place like home and no friends like the ones I grew up with. That's what I really miss. I have lived in Hattiesburg now for almost 4 years and now I work locally for an electrical contractor who I met in church. I belong to Grace Temple Church in Hattiesburg and have developed many wonderful friendships there. We have so many ministries going on. I've recently started working with the youth. It's very rewarding to see these young people grow. We also have a ministry that I'm very happy to be a part of. It's called The Quarterback Club. Each year, we have a weekend with High School Football players (team leaders) from around the state. It is a weekend of ministry and spiritual growth. Lives are changed in those few days every year. Those of us involved in leading this receive so much more than we ever could imagine giving to it. Our belief is "IT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU, IT'S WHAT HAPPENS IN YOU". Well, that's my story. Thanks for taking the time to check it out. Peace
