William's Story

Life William J. Frangos, Highland H.S. – Albuquerque 1974 Life after Highland Shortly after graduation I married my HS sweetheart, Jennifer Brewer, had a daughter, Christa and entered the Air Force to be a Command and Control Specialist. The AF had another plan though and said they had a shortage of Medics and I was to become a Medic. I spent two years working Intensive Care in San Antonio, TX and two years as an Emergency Medical Technician at Kirtland here in Albuquerque. Upon leaving the AF I attended college at UNM using the GI Bill. I figured that I had tried death as a medic and didn’t like it, so the most obvious next step was to try taxes as an accountant. During my time as a student, Ms. Brewer decided that I was additional baggage and chose not to carry me any farther. This turned out to be the best decision I never made! While attending UNM I worked as a bookkeeper and as an assistant girls track coach for you guessed it Highland. The girls I coached still hold the school records for the shot-put and discus at HHS. I dated and later married the love of my life, Adele (Dolan), a “75” Sandia grad. Upon graduation we moved to Montrose, Colorado where we lived for a year until the economy forced us back to Albuquerque. Adele works in the food service industry as a catering director. She began with the convention center, then Hyatt, Prairie Star and presently the Petroleum Club. I worked as a Controller for Graham’s (Graham Central Station, Cowboys & Cheers) and for the last seventeen years Continental Machining Company (owned by another HHS “74” Grad Dave Denison) Adele managed to bless me with two great kids,...Expand for more
Adam (22) and Vanessa (20). Needless to say, much of our time was spent on bleacher seats for Soccer, Basketball and Track. I did manage to coach both son and daughter in the throwing events at Eldorado where Vanessa holds the school record in the discus. Adam was a decathlete at UNM his freshman year but decided the time required was more than he could afford with work and school requiring more effort. (Finance major) Vanessa is attending UNM and is throwing the shot, discus and hammer on the track team. (pre-med) My true passion is fly fishing! The sport has consumed me and I just can’t seem to get enough of it. I have tried to give something back by volunteering with New Mexico Trout. (Treasurer for 5 yrs) Yet for some reason I receive far more than I can give. NMT gave me the opportunity to author a host of magazine articles, illustrate a book and provide instructional lectures. Most recently, I have co-authored a photo-essay book on fly fishing New Mexico "49 Trout Streams of New Mexico" which has been published by University of New Mexico Press in September 2006. It is available in most bookstores and on Amazon. Update: 4/30/14 Looking forward to our 40 year reunion this summer. Where did those years go? Now a grandfather of two sweet girls who have stolen my heart. Our kids have grown up, graduated college with advanced degrees and we are now looking ahead to retirement or at least a career change. Would love to travel more and have found great value in volunteer work with the Veterans. Still a passionate fly fisherman with a new lease on life with both knees having been replaced last summer. Maybe another book to be written...
