Brian's Story

Thanks for visiting. I don't receive messages here, so drop Janet and/or me a note on Facebook. Thanks to those who already have. For the rest of the story... Janet (Presslein, also Custer '71) and I are still married - gee, 44 years already! She's a retired elementary school teacher. We have three kids, and five grandkids. I made a career in the Federal civil service. Since '76 we've moved a few times - New Mexico, Germany, Maryland, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and back to Maryland. After 32 years with the Feds, I retired and took a job with my local County government, I fully retired in 2015. We sold our Maryland residence in '20 and moved to Texas. Our main interest these days is traveling - taking advantage of our "go-go" years (interrupted a bit by COVIDS). To date, we've now visited 78 countries. We just finished a Trans-Pacific and Japan voyage. A Norwegian Arctic cruise earlier took us to Nordkapp, Norway. Since January we have visited both Arctic and Antarctic Circles. Earlier we cruised around South America, down to Antarctica and up the Amazon River. Trips on the pending board: South Pacific (April '24), Greenland/Iceland (July '24), Eastern Danube (Oct '24). We aren't getting any younger, and those no-go years are coming! From January to March '18, we finished a 77-day 'round the world trip - visiting Italy, Morocco, Russia, taking the Trans-Siberia Railway to Mongolia and China, Vietnam, India, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and back home via LA. You can follow our RTW trip and other travels at roundtheworld2018(dot)Wordpress(dot)com. We have a little "Jucy" campervan, an ex-rental vehicle built on a 2010 Chrysler T&C chassis. It's easy to drive, easy on gas, and takes us around in some style - Quebec and Nova Scotia, the Smokies, Florida, Texas, the Black Hills, Yellowstone, the Utah National Parks, and Wisconsin. We can pull off and sleep almost anywhere - Y...Expand for more
es, even a Walmart parking lot. So far we have over 190,000 miles on this vehicle, about 50,000 our own. Knock on wood, right? We have now visited all 50 states. Otherwise, we've been riding (when not wrenching) our motorcycles - the ol' lady has her license, too - had it since '73. Janet and I took our (now sold) '83 Electra Glide to Harley's 110th celebration in '13. In '08 we rated a mention in the Journal-Sentinel for dumping the bike in the Pennsylvania mountains! (No one was hurt. Long story.) Decided not to attend the 115th and 120th, although we were in town. Rider magazine published a piece involving my '77 Sportster XLT in its May '09 issue. It's one of three "originals" still around of only 1,099 produced, actually the only real survivor I know of. (Bought it as a former cop bike demonstrator in '78.) Another article on the bikes appeared a few years ago in American Iron magazine. In Texas, I picked up a 2003 BMW 1200 LT. At home, I now enjoy "cooking" with my instant pot, from pho to barbacoa, pork roast, Mongolian beef, and beef Burgundy. I've also become fairly adept with a wok. I otherwise keep busy with my computer, genealogy, watch TV, write and read - exciting things! I published the fourth in a series of five books about the Indianapolis 500, and am working on the fifth. They're available online at BarnesandNoble or Amazon dotcom for download - the first volume is a freebie! Another "hobby" was campaigning for my son running for the Texas Legislature. Janet and I supported him by block walking and dropping literature around his district daily. Although he lost. I am proud to say I was able to vote for my son, too. We get home a few times a year, spending much of the summer. (Daughter's family resides in Waukesha.) Still keep up with MKE/WIS happenings, esp Brewers and Packers. Currently, we live in Fort Bend County, Texas, southwest of Houston. (1412)
